Title: Launch Control
Post by: chrisJDM on October 13, 2005, 11:18:48 AM
have seen a few cars advertised as having launch control, i assume this is designed for drag racing at getting a good launch.  What exactly is it? is it any good? worth getting?? etc

A mate of mine has it on his Audi A3 3.2 V6 with DSG (i think thats it) gearbox (semi-auto).
Basically he can rev the car to about 4k rpm, hold his foot on the brake at the same time, and then when ready take his foot of the brake. Gives a good acceleration but not as good as a manual version Id say.

Alot of the Scobby\'s & Evo\'s have this sort of thingy fitted from what I\'ve read and what friends who own them say. My mates STI was a good example when I sat in the passenger seat with him behind the wheel at the lights, he held it at 4k rpm and just drop the clutch no wheel spin, it just gripped and went, you could feel the car lift like a pouncing motion.  It was a great feeling sat there 1 second then your brain and other internal organs hitting the back of your spine and the seat!!!!!.
Unless I\'m mistaken it has alot to do with the computer etc plus a pretty strong drive line.

As far as I understand, Launch control allows you to set a max RPM for drag launches so you can hold you foot flat on the floor and the engine won\'t rev over that limit until after the car has launched and is moving. Helps for preventing wheelspin and ensuring that you can launch at the optimimum revs for the engine and turbo, can be linked with antilag (for - as the name suggests - getting rid of turbo lag on launch) see Autronic or MoTec websites for more info.

I\'ve got a Racelogic Traction control system that has a launch control button on it.

Not had all fitted yet due to funds and the fact that with half boost as it is running right now it\'s not worth fitting!

Apparently like someone said you can set it to a preset rev limit, say 4.5k so both turbos on boost but basically once you\'ve preset this you press the launch button, engage the clutch, 1st gear, floor the accelerator and the revs will go upto the point you set, then when the lights go green let out the clutch as aggresively as you dare and the traction control takes care of the rest.

Looking forward to having a play when it\'s fitted but for now it\'s sat in a box in the cupboard :(

regards

racelogic.co.uk and then find a dealer near you :)

There have been mixed reviews for this in use with a rotary engine, I believe there are a lot of people in the US using it without problems though.

Racelogic told me that their MD had an FD that had it fitted and working with no problems.

There was a certain FD a couple of years back with one. I think it may have been the race logic device. Im of the under standing it killed the engine. I think they create high levels of knock due to how they work.. Beware Me thinks I personally wouldlnt touch it there are methods to launch with very little extra bits. I know of a stock FD that done a 1.4 sec 60ft with ET streets on....

If you want some help with your 60fts tell me what u r doing and i will try and help ! off forum

i think the cheaper ones use the abs system and then just reduce power if it detects wheel spin.

well basically i am only 22 and this car is completely different from other cars i hav driven, apart from this car the fastest car i hav driven is a 1.4i Peugeot 106, so u get the point lol, and in that car i could pull away really well but in my rx7 from a standing start i dont seem to beable to get a very good pull away, what is the best method?

SD Minus - Yeah I have read pro\'s and cons for the racelogic system. It uses the ABS system to detect wheelspin and on detecting it cuts spark. Obviously all this is done in milli-seconds.

From doing a fair amount of research it all seems to be down to the way they are setup in the first place as to whether people have problems. Guys in the states using them very successfully.

I wasn\'t after the system for launching it was just a bit of extra piece of mind for when the weather takes a turn for the worse. You can dial in from 30%-0% slip that the system will allow before cutting in.

cheers

Argh I C.
I tend to give my car lots of stick and also prefer to keep the car simple and with out driver aids. If it has no detrimental effects then go for it. Still trying to perfect getting away but we are slowly doing so thanks to some cleaver ideas and lots and lots or R&D
