Title: What is this for?
Post by: Jake on October 12, 2005, 10:59:24 AM
Hi Guys,
Check out this picture of my rex\'s filter.  I\'m wondering what the pipe circled in white is for?  Shouldn\'t it be connected to the pipe coming from the filter circled in red?  Why would it have been taken off to breath on it\'s own?  Is this good or bad?  Any ideas?

Think its for your air pump.

Yeah it is, on my HKS filter it doesnt have the bit to plug them back in so there just left loose.

Cheers guys, is this best left as it is or would it be better being plumbed into the intake?  Anyone know if this would give any performance difference?

At the moment your sucking unfiltered air by the looks of it.

So this unfiltered air is going to the cat?  This wouldn\'t be a good thing I presume?  Could this block up the cat?

The unfiltered air is going into your engine. By the looks of the pic some air is going in the spare nipple on your RE Amemiya filter. Air going through this is not being filtered as its going around the spongey filter and just going in the rubber pipe.

I think you can just plug the loose pipe into the filter nipple because I think thats where its ment to be. Best bet is to phone one of the tuners as they will be able to tell you straight away.

If the pipe is for the air pump why is the air it\'s sucking in going into the engine?  I don\'t know exactly how the air pump works but that doesn\'t make sense from whats been said...Doesn\'t the air pump put air into the cat to lower emissions?  How is this going to the engine?

Just my 2p - the pipe from the air pump (the one to the left of the pink filler cap) should be connected to the filter - there is usually another space underneath the  one you have circled.

The Empty one you have circled needs to be capped off so no unfiltered air gets in.

The one you have circled in white, i think, should be left free as said by Kieron

No, Im talking about the RE Amemiya air filter. The air is being unfiltered because theres a pipe missing from it which you circled in red.

What Im saying is I think the pipe you circled in white goes there. Not sure why its left off but now theres an a hole in the filter for air to get in without being filtered so bits of dirt, oil, grease etc are being sucked in (unfiltered)

Is your air pump working or been blanked off?

Don\'t cap it off, that will kill the air pump. Plug the top pipe into the filter (comes from the top of the air pump) and leave the bottom one off (thats how mine is set up)

I wouldn\'t have thought that unfiltered air is getting into the engine.  I think that even if air does go through the nipple in red it still has to pass through part of the filter before it can get into the intake track.  I think unfiltered air might be getting into the cat though, not sure if this is a problem...any ideas?

I understand where the pipe should go but I\'m curious as to why the previous owner set it up this way.  Does this have some sort of benefit that the air pump line doesn\'t go through the filter?

QuoteInside the cone shaped filter is hollow. Its only the walls of the cone that have spongey stuff on it. There is no sponge between air goiong throught the red circled nipple and teh pipes that lead to the turbos. The pipe that goes on teh nipple sucks air not blows it out.

On a personal note, all this talk about nipples and sucking is getting me excited  :p  :wiggle

hahaha, I know what you mean...wait a sec...we\'re still talking about cars right  ;)

I\'ll have to have a look at the filter tonight and do some reconnection, any idea why it would have been setup like this in the first place?

no idea why it would be disconnected. Maybe it wasn\'t a good fit and popped off on its own?

Looks like it was never attatched properly in the first place.  Just push the pipe back on and adjust the clip into position.  It would be a shame for you to accidentally suck a few solid bits and bobs into the intake, that can lead to a sense of hunour failure! :yes

Agreed,  I have the same filter, you\'re sucking in unfiltered air thru that hole,  push pipe back on.  Your heat shield looks a bit temporary mate ;-)

I\'ll sort that out tonight, cheers guys.  Yeah that heat shield was a bit suspect.  Thats an old photo, it\'s since been removed.  I\'ve got a sheet of aluminium and I\'ve going to make up a proper one as soon as I get round to it.
