Title: Tuning tips please
Post by: Sean on August 21, 2003, 07:14:50 AM
I\'ve  a 2nd gen Turbo II. I want to go faster (I tried screaming but that didn\'t work) but at the same token, I don\'t want to tell my insurance company that it goes faster! Any tips on how to gain extra horses without officially modifying the car (or at least not getting caught?

Any tips valued, as I don\'t know the first thing about these things. My fastest car before this was a Mini with an Austin Allegro 1480cc lump in it!:o

Hi Sean,

Are you aiming to get a lot of hp or a little?

It is a difficult one to answer, as it depends on how far you want to go and what your budget is.

You can do things like change the exhaust system, making it more free-flowing.  You can gain quite a lot of power by doing this...HOWEVER!

When you change the exhaust system, you also need to ensure that the engine doesn\'t boost spike then/run lean etc..  So really, what you need to do is upgrade all your fuel system, and have a mappable ECU - to change air/fuel/timing etc.

So you can soon see that the costs get quite high.

So it\'s not as easy as tweaking an su carb and advancing the timing on a mini then!:(

well, given that Nitrous is not legal for road use, and therefore is not a mod you declare to the insurance company as you can\'t use it on the road anyway (it\'d be like declaring anthrax self defence mechanism under the passenger seat), technically you don\'t need to declare it...

I would check it out first tho...

I must admit that when I was looking to buy an RX, my original plans included NOS. But then when I bought the car home from bradford, I shit my pants and scrapped the idea. Thing is, I\'ve got used to it now, so Nos sounds like fun again!

Any info on kits or firms or anyone thats actually done this?;)

I\'m sick of all the boy racers round here. Iknow that my car is faster than any of theirs but they just wont learn. Me thinks NOS might show them! :cool :cool :cool

Nitrous xpress is good, Nos is OK, and there\'s a new firm importing from the states, and it\'s a quality install.

Just make sure you can get enough fuel, and the don\'t use too much - on a turbo engine, 35hp should be more than enough...

I would say ecu, intake, exhaust and FCD is the way to go for starters. Should give you an extra 50hp. The price for that, say £1500 after that you\'ll need injectors, fuel pump and re-mapping.

Better then say, £500 for an exhaust and intake only to find out you need an engine rebuild becuase you ran lean costing you an additional £2500.

Looking at your Sig, you live next to WGT, you lucky bugger! Go see Pip @ Wgt, you\'ll be in safe hand there.

Regards...

Jus

PS NOS IS Legal for road use so long as you declare it to the insurance company
