yeah cheers chris - im sure my projects get bigger and bigger !! LOL

its got the cherry bomb back boxes in the boot - so i assume the center red thingy is one aswell

will the coupe exhaust fit ???? - or do i need the cab one for the correct lengh ??

so the hunt starts for a full exhaust system ( why is nothing simple ?? ) - saying that if i spend 4K on a car i wouldnt have these problems !! :)

Thanks for the advice though matey

coupe exhaust fits,
Title: Exhaust probs :(
Post by: Grizzly on September 20, 2005, 10:56:09 PM
Yep a coupe exhaust would fit, the length is the same. Basically the Coupe and Vert floor is identical, the only real difference is it has heavier gauge plates welded on to give it some more strength. For example the spare wheels well on a coupe is against the back panel, on the vert its behind the seats. But the vert still has the well in the boot floor even though mazda had no intention of using? its all about what parts they can use on different models to cut retooling costs.

Looks like thats had a whole lotta bodging done on it mate :(  Get under there and hack the bugger off, get yourself a decent 2nd hand system.
And b4 anyone asks, my old system is totally shot, bits were dropping off of it as we moved it. (Big bits like exhaust hangers...)

How much did you pay for the cab again?  Even if you end up spending £500 its still a bargin!

Post by: grinder on September 21, 2005, 10:35:13 AM
its not if it still struggles to run once i have finished

been offered an exhaust though - its just the price what i paid for the full car

at this exact moment in time - its a toss up between

1 - fix her up
2 - break her into little peices

got bad news from work ( the think i dont deserve my wage and looking at a possible 7K drop in wages ) - so like i said - not sure what to do

why does it always happen to me

anyways chaps i will keep you all posted :)

Sorry to hear that Mate.

Well i\'d say it looks to good to break, Plus i know your good at that sort of stuff but from looking at the guy on E-bay in wakefield thats broke one it looks like the bits are quite hard to shift?

I\'d say stick with it mate. if you get it done and MOT\'d it has got to be worth over a Grand? so you will win as long as you dont go blowing stupid money on it? But if the worst does happen and you decide to brake it let me know becouse i\'m knee deep in rust at the moment would be nice to get some better parts to work with.

i think breaking it would be a last resort to be honest - its just in the back of my mind

and i have contacted the bloke on ebay about the exhaust :)

any ideas what i should pay for a second hand one ???

Well its all about condition, distance and if its still on the car (you have to remove it)

if its a v-good condition stocker i\'d expect to pay about £100ish. But if its stainless expect to pay more.

The problem you are going to face though is a stock T2 exhaust is not small and as you well know may be a pain in the rear to take apart.

If its mild dont pay more than £100, if its stainless (good quality) then maybe upto £150-175.

i like those prices !!

its just that i dont think the seller will !

I don\'t see why not? lets face it most people go for Uprated exhausts if theres is shot so there isn\'t realy a market for them?

I think exhausts are one of those problem items? if its on the car you will struggle to see the condition its in (due to all the heat shealds) and then you have the problem of transporting it so i can\'t see prices being too high for a second hand stocker. Its just finding one thats not rotten!! Turbo\'s and Mild steel exhausts just don\'t go.

:yes  What he said ---^

A scrap yard isn\'t going to charge you more for a rx7 exhaust than a modeo one, to them exhausts are exhausts, if you can go around a few scrapped \'7s then you can probably get a solid system for a smallish outlay.

working on that idea already :)

right then chaps !!

exahaust is off ( that was a challenge ) - so with better pics now aswell

so would you suggest

1 - still get a complete system
2 - play cheap and just put on the back boxes

and its DEFO in once peice as the pics prove :(

What sort of condition is the Down pipe in? can you cut it and weld the mounting plate of your Cat pipe on it?

I can\'t realy tell form the pics becouse of all the covers?
Title: Exhaust probs :(
Post by: Grizzly on September 23, 2005, 08:04:09 PM
well i\'d say its a mild steel after market exhaust that has seen better days.

Post by: grinder on September 23, 2005, 08:09:49 PM
so the covers will come off ???

ahhhhhhhhhhhhh thats tomorrows project then !!

i really dont fancy starting to weld this exahust up - it would end up a right old mess
Title: Exhaust probs :(
Post by: Grizzly on September 23, 2005, 08:15:34 PM
They are spot welded together usaly but you can get them off with a bit of messing about.

Post by: grinder on September 23, 2005, 08:24:23 PM
so a big crowbar then !!

so i should find a normal round exhaust underneath ??

so should i just throw a pair of back boxes on do you reckon to keep the cost down

or try and find a full system ??

Is there nobody that can sell you a box of odd straight and bends ? At least you can make a system up to get you going. If you need a pair of helping hands just give me a shout. Hope you find what you need !

Where abouts are the nearest rx7 scrappies in the NW ?

rx7 scrappies - thats the million pound question at the mo !!

like i said - it boils down to 2 things

1 - throw on 2 back boxes and see what happens
2 - go for a second hand full system ( at least it could be in a few sections )

im gonna try and get the shields off - so that i can have a good look at it , and try to see if i can tidy up the back box mounting points to see if i can just put two of them on

not sure what is the best path to be honest though ???

Stu just bite the bullet and get a new one made up, it wont cost that much, there arent many bends and its a simple layout. I bet you havent had a qoute? even if it costs ya a couple of hundred you still havent paid much for a vert have you!?

Thay Y piece looks a great deal like a hurley one I had before I knew any better.

What I would do is tart to get together all the bits you need to make the system up from the down pipe back. (From your pics the down pipe looks pretty solid?)
Back boxes can be had for about £20 from fleabay and stainless tube can be brought direct from a supplier.  Take all this to a fabrication shop WITH your old exhasut and ask them to weld all the new bits up to the same shape as the old one.  You may have to mess around a bit when it comes to fitting time, but I bet it works out pretty cheaply.

You could even go up to bosal on walton summit an buy just the box. Have a look in the yellow pages for mild steel tube suppliers and make your own exhaust if your on a really tight budget. The y-pipe could be made by slitting a pipe at an angle and welding it back together !

Urm, I had an exhaust made up for me and it wasn\'y cheap!! £550 but it was a while ago and by JP Exhausts in stainless.

I have also made an exhaust myself and in bits it was over £150 then i had to make it and its harder than it looks getting the angles right. I supose it would be a diffrent story if you did a single exit? But be carefull of cheep box\'s there usaly Very loud.

I know moneys tight but if you are looking at buying a new one the best deal i\'ve seen for a while on exhausts was the one Brett has just bought, Maybe an Option?

there is no way im gonan get an exhaust made up or try and do one myself - its just not in me to do that !

well i got the remains of the back boxes off - and the Y pipe is looking in very good nick ( just very slight surface rust )

the centre box looks solidly welded on aswell

i just need to get the down pipe shields off to see what its like under there

i might just throw on a pair of back boxes to be honest - if push comes to shove and i do need a full system - i just need one with no back boxes !! LOL

and spending 270 on an exhaust really isnt in my budget at this moment intime  - that would get me 1/2 a brand new roof !
