Ok first off, sorry for the lack of pics, but we were so covered in 15years of road dirt that I didn\'t fancy getting the camera out every 15mins
First job was to get the car off of the ground, I jacked each end up and then put it down onto stands. Gave the whole car a damn good shake to be sure it was rock solid.
Swearing so far 0.00%
We decided to split the old system at the end of the down pipe. The two 19mm nuts and bolts were fairly easy to remove. Next stage was to undo any other mounting points. (These are a combination of 12 and 13mm bolts) Whilst I did this my Dad disconnected the split air pipe before the valve.
Starting from the front and working back we removed the rubber hangers. At this point I stayed under the car and held the system level whilst my Dad removed the rubbers from the silencers. Once dropped down the exhaust was dragged out, rusty but undamaged :D
Swearing so far 67.8%
Now comes the really good part, removing the sodding, accursed, pox ridden down pipe. In order to gain access to the 3 mounting studs/nuts the heat shield needs to be removed/loosened.
Luckily most of the nuts came away without shearing off, there was one casualty however. (At this point I also disconnect the Lambada sensor and tucked its wire out of the way) I must point out that perseverance and an extensive tool kit are required to get these little 10mm suckers out. Once all of the heat shields retaining nuts had been removed we were able to prise it open enough to see someo f the down pipe nuts. However the top heat shroud required some \'persauding\' to leave its present position. (Say hello to Mr.Tyre lever and a viscious jabbing motion courtosey of my old man :rollin )
Once it was out of the way we were able to get a few angles on the 14mm nuts that retain the down pipe. 2 are at the top and one is at the bottom. None of them are easy to get to, and much improvisation was required to get enough movement to crack the top nuts. The lower nut is relatively easy after whats gone before it! (We reomved the upper air injection pipe at its flange to make it easier to get access)
The down pipe can now be removed, make sure you take out the Lambada sensor, its 22mm.
Swearing so far is a massive 433.5%
The next step was to screw the lambada sensor into the new down pipe. Once this was done the top of the pipe was coated with exhaust pipe sealant and it was attatched promptly. The CAT replacement pipe followed this (comes with its own gaskets), the the mid pipe, and finally the rear box.
Sadly it looks as though the downpipe is at the wrong angle and the whole system sits about 10mm too high as a result, ater a bit of bodging we were able to get some clearance between the rear box and the body work, but its by no means perfect.
Swearing down to a mere 25%
The air feed pipe was left on, but venting to atmosphere. We are planning to make an insert for the exhaust to allow air injection.
Whilst the car was up the gearbox levels were checked as was the diff levels.
Now came the time to start her up and check for any leaks. (There were no leaks)
...However it was unbelievably loud, probably over 100dbl at 1200rpm and throwing out fire at every blip of throttle. (Ok, so that is really cool but its just asking for the local plod to get out of shape) It was decided to fit the silencer bung (reduces the diameter from 4" to about 1") On first test it just rattled like no ones buisness, so we removed and rolled the edge out a bit. This made it a push fit and cured the rattle. The idle is still very loud but its passable. (I\'m going to make a proper silencing bung with a bigger apature)
On the road the exhaust is very unobtrusive at cruising speeds and idle...until you hit the loud pedal, at which point all hell breaks loose, even with the bung installed! It genuinely hurts your ears from within the cabin at WOT with the boost coming on, outside its simply deafening. It sounds like a proper racing car :D Watch out at RSIII \'cos I promise to run her unsilenced....
I\'m going to shoot a video tomorrow which I will get hosted and link it to here.
The exhaust is an SS autochrome system. Its cheap, but the construction seems to be fairly good. If you live in a built up area this system is an absolute no no, if you live in the sticks like me, its a god send.
:cool
So what differences has it made to performance?
TBH its hard to say as I\'m running with the restrictor in place, but I did manage to stay with a Ford Mustang GT (05 plate heading back from goodwood at 7pm) right up until silly speeds he managed to open up about 3 car lengths on me over the length of a 2 mile straight.
got any pics of the finished result yet? nice little write up that btw.
mine is just a little throaty on idle - once you floor it - the noises it makes .. :D :D :D :D
i think im gonna start on the cab exhaust today - that should be a challange :( - its up on ramps at the front - so i can work under it - what i didnt think of is how do i get the exhaust out ????????
nothing simple is it :(
"We decided to split the old system at the end of the down pipe."
HOW ??????????????????????????????????
mine was really really on well - did you simply use spanners/sockets ... or did you use something else ( blow torch , a bomb ?? )
We\'re clever thats how we did it! :flamed :p :burnout
Anyway, heres the vid, turn the volume up to get full appreciation!

:evillaugh
ooohhh loud !!!
sounds nice, its not that loud comapred to mine !!! you need an external wastegate for that...... Unfortunately i dont have a vid but T2REW and TREX will vouch for me!
This one is much much louder with the restrictor removed, but I dont want to get pulled by the police, so the power sapping bug stays in for now. (I\'m gonna make a new one with a proper silenced core and a bigger ID, should see more power and less noise :D
antnicuk\'s exhaust is defanitly very loud. it has to be to make up for the lack of speed. he he he
cough cough......
Brett, why dont you try one of those bungs Laeeq has,

at least i can do a 360 degree donut, unlike you who can only manage 180 degrees.... :rollin
I\'m planning on making my own bung up, it will ahve a bigger central hole, but it will also be designed around traditional silencer principals, and with luck wont restrict the flow as much as the current bung does.
bring on the 100 top speed eh... lol
nice vid brett. played it through my floorstanders and your car sounds like its angry as well as loud!!!! saying that though it wasnt that loud when ya wasnt booting it....
No, in fact its very agreeable when cruising, when its on boost with the bung out, well thats just offensively loud. In a good way :D
Running without the restrictor makes one hell of a difference :bandit
