Title: Paint??
Post by: Grizzly on September 17, 2005, 05:33:03 PM
Has any of you come across this before?

I am getting set to start work on my cars new paint, i put it on the wash at work and steamed it off with the power wash. I didn\'t go close or anything and blew 70% of the paint of the boot lid and 20% of the 1/4? (came off in one peice nearly) what is really bad is this is the original paint and it took it right down to the grey primer!!

Kind of a good job its getting some fresh paint or i\'d be a very unhappy bunny right now.

After all that i thought about the idea of my new paint being put over something that is not adhered so i started to strip it back and it doesn\'t come off like normal paint (in dust form) it rips of in chunks??

So the moral of the story boys and girls if your car has its factory colour DONT!!! go near a Steam cleaner.

I managed to blow a small piece of paint off with a normal pressure washer, wont be heading near it with a steam cleaner!

its more than likely you\'ve stumbled onto an old repair. the mazda paint just wouldnt have come off like that. its probably been painted on those two panels. the primer sounds suspect to me :(  if its not gone off properly the paint wont stick to it..

paint will not come off with a pressure washer if its been put on properly.

Nope, Its a white T2.

I can say 100% it as mr Mazda intended. the Body has never seen paint (can\'t say the same for the doors and wings thought).

I am very clued up on the paint side of things and i was suprised.

The primer looks quite odd in its self. its very thin and if i didn\'t know better looks like dark beige anodising (spelling?) its hard to DA off.

how do you know for sure its mazda?? the car would have been painted in one go so if it falls off the boot it will fall off exactly the same on the rest of the car.

It has. I tried it this morning. It blew a large chunk of the bonnet too.

I know the doors and wings have had paint (looks bad) but the shell, boot and bonnet has not.

The funny thing is i bought another boot lid some time ago from a guy braking a vert. this has been painted before but over the mazda paint (without wet on wetting or high build) in direct gloss. This has signs of doing the same thing (a area of paint missing about the size of a 50p).

Now when i look at the car closly around seams and edges i\'ve noticed its very thin. for example if the car had gone oxidised (which it has) and someone has been over G3\'ing/Polishing it and worn the paint off? But this would not explanine why its not stuck properly?

I don\'t know if it makes any diffrence at all but the car is a 1990 T2 Vert (UK) in crystal white (For now ;))

all i can say is make sure you get all that crap off before putting new paint on.

tell me about it. I\'m not going to spend weeks preping the thing to have it fall off ;) so i\'m going to strip the lot off (we\'ll my aprentice is going to strip the lot off LOL)

O well at least i\'m in the right trade. :)

Mine is the same. The (white) factory paint is very poorly bonded to the primer. I had the same effect when painting over zinc primer that hasn\'t really dried (like days)...

I\'d get onto Mazda and ask if they had any quality issues on that production line, just as a point of interest.

;) I\'ve kind of moved away from the hands on stuff but yeh i\'m a Painter in a proper body shop.

Well i\'ve owned one of each colour apart from the grey one\'s. I experianced it on my red T2 (but not as bad, i could\'nt blow it off with a Steam cleaner) but the white one is by far the worst.

Funny thing is its like 15 years old and if the paint is that bad it would have been painted? but its only recently i\'ve noticed large chunks of paint coming off it?
