Title: steering wheel adjustment?
Post by: scooby_si on August 15, 2003, 02:24:49 PM
Please god tell me there is sum way to adjust the steering wheel on at least sum model 3rd gen RX7\'s?
Just i went for a quick test drive in one, before considering putting down a deposit with an importer;) & while performance was reasonable, it had just been rebuilt so no redlining action :( but every time i needed to use the clutch i needed to stick my leg to the left of the steering wheel & well i will impress my driving instructor as no way i can do owt other than 10 to 2 position unless i wanted to punch myself in the nuts every time i turned the steering wheel 90 degrees :o lol. & dont even mention the idea of heel toe braking NO CHANCE!!!
So anyway couldn\'t find any obvious buttons or owt to adjust the steering wheel:confused: please tell me there is an option to do this on sum RX7s else i\'m either guna have to go for a different car all together, spread my legs like a cheap ho everytime i wana change gear or get a steering wheel the size of a 5p piece ;) lol
HELP i wana buy one i do but that is a fair disadvantage :(

no adjustment, best I can come up with is have ya legs shortened, or do a chair adjustment, you can get uk spec seat sliders to take the seat back further, there are several guys driving at over 6\'

A few guys have just ground at the spot welds on the runners and rewelded them thereby gaining a couple of inches...

i dont suppose getting an extention hub for the steering wheel would give you the extra distance you\'d need?? or have you still got the airbag steering wheel??

ryb2001 what do you mean by steering wheel hub  it was a standard wheel on the one i tried but if i\'m guna get a RX7 i think i will need to get the wheel & seat position modified just dont like driving position of kegs well bent & steering wheel on the floor ;)

well if you buy an aftermarket steering wheel you get a ring that goes between the cars column and the new wheel, and these differ in size, and seeing as the steering wheel points upwards slightly if you get a longer hub ring then the steering wheel will be further out (so you dont keep banging your hands on the indicator sticks like i do) and you will also probably gain an inch or two leg room underneath (every little helps! :D )

cheers for that sounds a cunning plan ;)
BTW dont suppose you know how much you can potentially reweld the runners further back before hitting seats do ya? ie how far is there from seat all the way backj to rear seats on non modified un i seam to recall there wasn\'t bugger all room with the seat right back as it was :0 lol

cant say i do, but i do know that the back seats are useless and should be replaced with storage bins ;)

im sure you could *probably* remove the seats and mounting frames, then have the frames drilled in to the floor further back (as ppl wont need leg room if you get rid of the back seats) and then replace the seats. maybe some members on here or the US site know more about this but i think it sounds possible! :)

hmm wonder if the US seat runners were the same as the UK ones ? , might be a cheaper alternative than having them modified or sourcing (rare) UK ones.
