Just read this on one of the US rx7 sites:
"The Spirit R is detuned to put out 280hp. It has a factory provision to
be reprogramed. It is known a G code computer. Once reprogrammed the engine puts out 340hp."
Anyone ever heard of this before? Did Mazda really have a secret "more power" setting hidden away in the ecu?! :xconfused
As said an another thread "I smell Bullshavings!"
hmmm a neighbour of my parents is a ecu genius by all accounts... he just has nack for reading circuits and improving performance... he has done work for brabus.. and bently... getting the 450 bhp GT Cont. to about 900 bhp with some clever electrickery... was thinking of have a chat with him to see what he can do with rx7\'s... there will be other things to take into account like fueling and things but its worth a chat isnt it?...
as for the 340 spirit r ... hmmm possibly... arent all jap cars limited to 280 bhp?... or shuld I just shut my mouth?...
I agree that if you modify the injectors, push up the boost, etc you CAN get 340 from an RX-7. But not from ONLY modifying the ECU.

But the standard ECU does control boost, the ECU sends signals to the standard boost solenoid to control boost , so if you modify an ECU you can change the boost level.

Very true, but i think the standard setup cannot handle to much of an increase in boost before a boost CONTROLLER is required...
EDITED as im a donut!
Spirit Rs have a standard boost gauge instead of the oil pressure gauge I believe. Spirit Rs run at 12psi as standard. I remember reading about a guy in Japan Dynoed his standard Spirit and got 300 at the fly with no mods, so I suppose tweaking the ECU to give you an extra couple of PSI to 14psi could get you around 330 to 340 at the fly.
I suppose the cost of finding someone who could reprogram G code computer would be the cost of someone buying an APEXI Power FC anyway, plus you will get more power out of the APEXI.
I reckon with the Spirit R , Apexi computer, Exhaust ,Decat and Intake you will be able to get over 300 REAR Wheel HP
What is a g-code computer, anyway??
probably just means its programmable , it has a ROM instead of an EPROM.
As oppossed to Fifty Cents G-UNIT rap crew lol :rollin
Boost gauge? How does that increase HP?
I dont think Donato meant that a boost gauge will increase HP more to do with tuning and to see how much boost you hitting safely

DOH! i have edited my post, i meant to say a boost controller not boost gauge!
Ok that makes more sense.
The boost limitation is that the std ecu runs out of "scope" in that if you turn boost up, it cannot pour in enough fuel through the injectors to match the amount of air the Turbo pumps in.
Even if you re-programmed the ECU for this, my guess is that the standard Fuel pump and injectors would not be up to job either.
The stock boost controller cant handle to much of a hike in boost, it isnt strong enough. Sorry for the confusion, i should have made myself clear..
Also, the standard ecu does not ACTIVELY control boost.
Yes, it opens and closes a solenoid to vent boost. But there is nothing in the ECU that says "When I see 14PSI of Boost, I must open the solenoid more"
There is a Boost sensor, the MAP ( Manifold Absolute Sensor) , but that ECU only uses that to put in the correct amount of fuel.
Bear in mind that in recent years the gentlemans agreement of 276-280bhp has been stuck to in name only. A standard R34 was dyno\'d at over 320bhp when it was imported back in the late 90\'s.
It may be that the internals can handle more boost with a reprogrammed ECU and the relevant controllers. Has anybody over here dyno\'d a std Spirit R?

Correct they are many cars in Japan as standard that produce 300+bhp
but for politically correctness they are advertised as 280.

Yes correct Martin, but the ECU does control the duty cycle of the boost Solenoid, so a lot of custom chips out there hike up the duty cycle to increase boost levels.
Just happens the Mazda Engineers increased the duty cycle on the ECU for 99 spec and onwards. Remember they upgraded the turbos to deal with the extra 2psi being run for reliabilty.
