Hi,
Well at long last took the car down for MOT and unsurprisingly it has failed at the emissions test. It is a 92 import type r so i know a cat test is not needed but apparently it failed miserably at the none cat test and the smell of petrol at idle even after it has been warmed up is eye watering.
It has a apexi induction kit and does actually have a cat fitted with a kakimoto back box so why would it fail so badly?????
also it is running a bit lumpy at idle(almost sounds like a little popping or perhaps misfire) could this be something to do with it?
Any help would be greatly apreciated cause i just want to get the sodding thing on the road now!!
Regards
Nick
How did they test it ?
Reason i ask is mine is a katimoto full through system with HKS induction and mine you can smell petrol all the time and is running rich .. and mine passed .. They tested mine on Idle for about 10/15 seconds if that ... and it passed .
think they just tested it on idle too but apparently the co levels were sky high even with the cat! i thought it would have passed the none cat test easy?
Cheers
Nick
Not so I\'m afraid, all the early Rx7\'s were fitted with CATs and/or Thermal reactors as standard to get them through the emissions regulations. Was it dropping at all after a good revving?
You need to go see the RX Dr. down in Reading, has alsorts of fixes for rotaries ;-)

Brett- no i dont think it was dropping at all when it was revved.
Could it be that the air pump has been disabled? just been searchin through old threads and saw something regarding it. do you know if this would make the car idle slightly lumpy too?
Gary- Cheers mate, if all else fails looks like ill be making a trip down to the doctor!
Thanks
Nick

Mine is a 92 type R. I having the same problem too. With HKS open pod filter and mid/rear exhast box and stock ECU. At idle the CO reading was like 5-6 and at high rev I think it drop to 4. But still at idle is running rich..... But I\'m from Malaysia and over here we do not need to perform emission test to get the car on road. Still figuring why my FD is running rich at idle. But I was told it is normal........
Cheers,

do you have your air pump connected?
would a knackered cat cause this kind of problem?
Cheers
knackered cat/faulty lamda if running orig ecu..ur emmis shdnt be this bad airfilter and exhaust wld make next to no difference on a standard car
jasonlel...whats your email address bud?
Right well it was the airpump that was disabled and it has finally passed the emissions test!(phew!)
Now the air pump is working is does make a rather strange sound when accelerating almost like an elephant(sorry only thing i could think of!)
Could it be to do with it sucking air through the air filters perhaps?
Bit embarresing driving around with an elephant in my bonnet!!! ha :rollin
Thanks

It\'s quite common for the air pump to make some strange mooing noises, especially on the overrun, when it cycles on and off (the air pump switches off above about 2000 rpm).
