Title: All Trailing nines
Post by: dandan on September 13, 2005, 08:23:56 AM
Hi All,
I picked up some new spark plugs last night, going to fit them today some time, but i happened to check through them and all four have a little letter T on them for trailing. As they are all 9\'s, is this not a problem? Can i just stick them in wherever?
Just thought i would check before i stuff them in and make the engine go all weak at the knees.

Nope, no problem. Stick them in wherever.

It\'s quite common for people in this country to fit 9\'s all round. Most people do that in fact. Apparently it\'s better for reducing chances of detonation, but will slightly increase your chances of flooding (as long as you\'re careful however, that shouldn\'t be a problem!)

You may find that you currently have 9\'s all round anyway!

They are down nearer the bottom of the engine, on the right hand side as you\'re looking at it. It\'s generally easier to get to them from underneath the car, rather than above.

So, jack the front up, and put it on axle stands. Crawl underneath and remove the under cover. Then find the sump, and go to the side of the engine i indicated they were on. Look up, and you will see the four HT leads plugged into the spark plugs. Space is a bit tight, but there is enough!

Yeah that was the plan, i spotted a hole from underneath, luckily my neighbour has a two poster lift which should make things easier.

I need to remove the \'under cover\'? what does that look like?

Big bit of plastic! Covers the bottom of the engine bay - apparently it helps with cooling, and if you don\'t have this fitted, you can see engine temps fly sky high....apparently!

Colder plugs allow for higher boost.

It\'s that due to reduce the likely hood of detonation?

Ok the operation was a success, TBH I found it pretty easy, the space is a little tight but I had heard horror stories of it taking 2hours and more, I had them out and changed in about 20 mins!
I didn\'t have to remove any plastic covers, there was a big one under the front but there is a gap further back that opens right onto the plugs, so i used that. One of the more successful mechanical jobs I have attempted.

My friendly next door neighbour/mechanic also cleaned my airfilter for me cos he said it was in a right state and i\'m sure the car is more responsive now, and should apparently increase my MPG which is a bonus in these troubled times!

Still not sure if it has fixed the slight hesitation/flutter on full boost, it was definately more noticeable before, maybe I am imagining its still there but it does feel like it is just slightly holding back. Maybe I\'m too used to the power already, I need more!!

BTW I had all nines in there already and never had trouble starting after short runs, I guess I\'m just lucky!

Drama queeens take 2 hours. I remove the black plastic elbow on top, also takes me about 20 mins to replace plugs.

People take 2 hours to change plugs? How come? Do they spend 1 hour looking at the top of the engine trying to figure out where they are? Then another half hour accepting that they\'re not on the top, and looking round the rest of the engine looking for them - and then another half hour finally finding them and then changing them!?

I reckon so!

:D ;) :o
