Title: Boost Probs ? with pics ....
Post by: Bulla on September 08, 2005, 07:46:28 PM
Car hasnt felt as responsive as it was over the last few days. So I popped the bonnet and have been checking pipework. Tightened up screws holding intercooler pipes and noticed this big gap on the pipe below.... in pics 113 and 114, now I\'m guessing that shouldnt be there and it needs refitting and tightening back up using the screw in pics 115 and 116 but the two pipes that run to the airbox are in the way and I cant get my hands down there to pop it back in or get access to the screw. Am I gonna have to remove the pipes leading to the air box in order to push this pipe back in ?

Thanks for any help.....

Yes, It makes life a lot simpler as it\'s :eek  not hard, 10 min job. Oh you may well find oil inside the piping when you take it off to reseat and tighten up don\'t panic thats normal.  :wave HTH.

Damn no wonder you havent got no boost.
You gonna have to remove your strut brace bar first to get to the Jubilee clip screw properly ,and so you push the intercooler pipe back into the rubber coupler

1/4  ratsh*t set is far better, as you and I know you will be giving it W.O.T. and the dame thing will pop off just as you are killing some chav etc or whilst doing an overtake. Do the job right the first time and forget it. It has happened so strip it down ans make sure everything is in order. IMHO.
Yoah--BB how are you mate, hear about my impersonation of a JETCAR at Pod. :burnout  :rollin  :wiggle

yeah just been reading about it John. I did the same impression when mine let go, covered both lanes with Jet smoke lol lucky the oil from my turbos didnt catch fire like yours, that must have been a scary moment.
Waiting for my intercooler to come through then I will be able to come out and play again.

Bulla recommendations for a ratchet set hmmm just make sure they are the quality dropped forged set of sockets and Ratchet

Recommendations? Go somewhere else to buy tools, you will probably get a better quality for the same money  ;)

Yup, hunt down your local Snap on man, then you get a lifetime guarrantee too!

Right got me tools out today and removed pipework, noticed that the rubber coupling the intercooler pipe had popped out of looks torn under the jubilee clip. Coz I havent got a replacement I popped the pipe back in and retightened the clip. Gave the car a little blat on idle and pipe stayed put. What I did notice though that the fat pipe coming out of the intercooler moves loads, is this supposed to happen ? Also when giving some throttel still a noticeable air leak sound, I presume from the tear in the coupling. I took it for a little rip up the block and set the PFC to record the highest boost and it peaked at 0.68, seems a little low.

So I\'m gonna have to replace the coupling but with what ? Is there an alternative to the oem part ? And is there an alterative to the jubliee clips ?

Oh and is the pipe coming off the intercooler supposed to move up and down under throttle or is that something else that needs looking at ?

All helpy greatly appreciated, I\'m willing to learn !

If your going to Halfords for tools buy from there proffesional range lifetime guarrantee and they are actually made in the same factory as snap on at a fraction of the cost. I use both at work and the halfords gear is just as good. If you do break anything take it back and it will be swapped no questions asked.

the pipes will move as they pressurise, thats normal,  thats why people fit a hard pipe kit.

You should be able to pick up one of those hose couplings from pretty much anywhere as anyone who has gone single will have them.  Or measure the OD of the I/C pipe and buy a silicone coupling to fit. As for jubilee clips,  its quite hard to find good ones,  go for stainless steel ones,  there is a range called Hi Grip that i havent managed to break yet.  I know Burtons sell them.  Halfords definately dont!

Their Pro range tools as Kev mentioned are good though. I havent managed to break their toggle ratchet spanner yet but i\'m working on it................

whilst you have the silver crossover pipe removed, you may as well replace the stock rubber coupling with a smart new samco hose like mine..cost me a fiver for 2. Also replace the coupling from the silver crossover pipe to intercooler with a samco hose. just take your stock coupling to a decent car accessorie shop and they will cut one to size for you.ask for 2 the same size. They are much more upto the job and take a lot more wear and tear than the standard coupling, also get 4 new jubilee clips as the old ones have probly been removed loads of times and do wear out..sooner or later the stock coupling is gauranteed to split..i would bet £1000 on that! it happened to me and i could hear whoosing and loss of boost. Removing all the pipes for the airbox really is not hard at all..the hardest part is grabbing those bloody huge ring clips and getting them onto the airbox again. Whilst all that is out check coolant pipes are ok by turbos

just make sure not to drop anything down those holes, that would mean lots of work......
