Are the smaller second bits ok, front or rear rotor?
Was you a lucky man?

Ouch.  When did that happen?

Post by: TRex on September 06, 2005, 10:05:49 AM
Thats what happens when you max out the Twins (19+psi) while also messing about with the ecu timing to get into the 11\'s with \'stock twins\'........  :yes

Yes Gary, Lucky man indeed...  :D
Just that little corner bit M.I.A. really, some minor gouge marks on the rotor housing(front) from that missing bit, but all in all everything else seems grand.

End of the day, she was due a re-build anyway, poor things done a whole 5K miles...
Now it will be done proper.... :bandit

I presume you were running on pump gas without water? ignition is nothing like on a piston engine for power gains. Does still help pop motors tho :p
Title: Hmmmm,
Post by: TRex on September 06, 2005, 03:44:04 PM
Pump gas yes (98) , and yes, no water.. I tend to try not getting water in the tank fuel as it causes all sorts of problems..  :p

I won\'t comment on this thread about Water Injection which you are on about as I believe it\'s used as a \'tuning excuse\' and we can talk about it for ages.. (I\'ll start another session on this sometime for my fans)

\'Brett\'- Ceramics... hmm, not worth the money for my application really...

This project was not to happen till the winter months really, but now fortunatly/unfortunately has been brought foward by my experimenting and learning enthusiasm....   :bandit

run a little Toiline (sp)(small percentage) in your fuel, helps with the detonation on increased timing ignition :)

Thats funny. The other opinion would be that it allows u too run higher boost (with good tuning still) without busting an apex seal, or leaner for better economy or.... Surely if you are by your own admission experimenting then - unless you have a money tree in yer garden (and you\'re an FC owner so we know the ansa to that! ;) :rollin) to allow for regular rebuilding - any thing that gives u a safety margin is a sensible option? If not, then why run 98 - stick in the cheap stuff instead. Especially as 98 is now 102.9/litre here :reallymad

Soooo, biiiig port job over the winter months then matey? DIY-ing?

Been in this game for long long time(non rotors), what you are now learning, I\'ve forgot!  ;)

I bought this car as an unfinished project that someone started, ran out of dosh(£12k+) and paitents before they got the car to run...
I already had a T2 I had only just bought to mod to the max(project A), already bought many bits and had a couple £K more of sh!t on order for it!
But this chance(present car) was too good to pass up as it will save me a lot of dosh, the car had decent ingridents to be a monster, with a bit more thrown at it.   And as you will know it\'s sometimes not a bad idea to buy a car with mods as the owner/seller \'never\' gets back what was spent on the machine!

So took the chance and got it, sold the other T2 and all the bits and got this one running.
Never was happy with it as I always had problems with her, one thing to the next, you name it!
So along with these dramas, I was also learning the Rotary and Microtech mapping, and learning rather quickly, probably by force..  :p

When I took her to RotorStock 2, I was hoping to at least drive her there without RAC assistance and enjoy RS and hopefully get to run a few runs and maybe make it home (2 hr trip)..
Made it fine and just had to go on the strip for a \'Shakedown\', and as you know she performed quite well indeed.... managed near 20 runs, yes 20 hardcore runs........ did have some problems and broke a few things, but continued to run and drive home...
Pratically every run, I had made some changes to the map settings.. had the laptop on, recording runs and adjusting/playing/learning....
This is also my first time with mapping these cars and the Microtech software, so the car has done well with me fecking about and learning at the same time.....
After RS I confirmed what I knew, the car has Mega potential and to get that out I need to continue to learn, experiment, mess about and change a few things...
But  back of my head I was not ever confident of the motor and set up and decided over winter I\'ll pull it off road regardless if I got it right or not and start again from scratch, my way.... Also needed to mod and fix other areas of the car as well anyway.

So when the engine finally gave up the ghost a few weeks ago, I was actually not ****ed off at all... 1. I wanted to start fresh anyway and  2. she made an 11 sec run while again I was messing about trying stuff...

Now I am where I wanted to be and hopefully this time I\'ll have the true real potential without the uncertainity...

Actually it\'s still quite good really, has seen alot of action in it\'s short space of life (3K miles)... will just need a wee bit of emery on the pressure plate and Flywheel though........

I\'ll flag up some more shots as we go along...

How long are u execpting the clutch to last? what are the exedy carbons like to drive out of interest as I dont recall having tried one? I imagine they have a quite nice feel. We were (may still be!) Exedy dealers but had so much rubbish from them and zero warranty success on dead clutches with f/a mileage on them that we dont sell them any more. Totally unhelpful. We sold a lot of their clutches too, not just FD. I know another of the Pro 16 from Jap Show has had the same crap too. Thats why we have gone into the Xtreme\'s - Max has had one in his car a for a couple of years now without issue including a lot of track hours, and the drag car has always run Xtreme and never let us down.

Back on topic :) - what apex seals are u going to use next? sticking with Mazda\'s finest for definite?

That seal appears to have been broken by detonation.3mm seals can take a lot of detonation before breaking.TREX did you not hear the detonation?
What was your ignition timing? I run a Microtech too.

Dont go there Rich about Exedy, I have gone through two of there pressure plates in The Pulsar GTI-R, WHAT A LOAD OF DOG POO, dont buy Exedy!!!
The dealer (Who will remain nameless but Well Known in the Pulsar circles) I bought them from was totally unhelpful, denied after having seen the pressure plate there was a problem reluctantly he sent back to Exedy, blaming my mechanic (My mechanic who has bulit a 550bhp Mini V8 I might add) that he has not fitted right (hold on its only a clutch simple job for a mechanic), and Im still waiting to hear from them after 5 weeks!! DONT BUY EXEDY, customer support zero.

The clutch disc was fine, but both Pressure Plates from them died just after 800 miles!!! I mean WTF!!!

oooppps sorry for Hijacking the thread
Good luck with the rebuild Trex, what porting will you go for?

running 19 psi without every having been mapped for that boost might have had something to do with it................
Title: Hmmmm,
Post by: TRex on September 11, 2005, 12:07:56 AM
Spot on Tim, it was indeed detonation... As that was exactly what I was monkeying about with.. \'Timing\'....  :eek

I was trimming less and less timing as the boost went up.  It seemed to be working up to a point as the car was running mega sweet with 2 mid to low 12\'s, so with a smell of touching 11, went for broke(no jokes please)  just cracked the boost some more, well a fair bit more and leaving the timing where it was(believe -05*).
Initally set up normally was -10* @ 15psi, dropped it to -05* @ 15psi experimenting and felt good.... then threw the boost at it..
 The rest is history....

Felt it... hhmmm difficult really.... man I had soo many little dramas with the car I wern\'t sure what it was really, but yes I did feel a big missfire/backfireing and some loss of power.. it was about full pelt in 2nd, continued in 3rd(as you do) but then had to give up as it was surely not feeling right....  she was still running seemingly ok funny enough.
Some of the bystanders said there was a lot of smoke, after the strip down with no other internal damage, I can now assume that it was unburned fuel smoke.. also explains the misfire/backfireing...

I initally thought it was my coils fecking about again as I had a problem with coils just previous to this(long story). Basically I kept getting \'RPM error\' faults all the time and the timing was all over the place sometimes.. these were MT coils I had recently fitted when changed from the lt8 to lt12...
I have since gone back to the original T2 coils and seems ok till this mishap..
I have now sent these coils to be tested to remove suspicion.

Now after further consultation and inspection/measurements, I will be replacing the revelant Rotor Housing(front) as that is damaged(scored).

what about the intake stroke? exhaust stroke is not much to worry about. My spare engine(now) has three gashes on the exhaust stoke but just a slight gash onthe intake. You can definatly feel it cos it is down on comp.

depends if you are going for a cheap rebuild. Also if you are porting it and want to check if it all works use it. sand any rough edges back on the gouge. It is not something I like doing, for experimental work why use new parts?
Title: Hmmmm,
Post by: Timrxmotors on September 11, 2005, 04:22:29 PM
You may as well use that housing, those marks aren\'t too bad. When you say you have -5 on the timing,is that referring to the T map screen? If so that is -5 from +25 on the T rpm screen,ie 20 degrees advance, which is way too much.
