Title: Intake air; where does it come from?
Post by: Mave on September 05, 2005, 01:02:08 PM
OK, sorry if this has been asked before (I did look!), where does the intake air come from? I\'ve got an FD with a HKS dual filter setup, and it gets pretty hot (at a guess the filter body itself is 60C) :eek . Poking around the engine bay, I realise that I can\'t work out where the air is supposed to come in; does it all come through the radiator?

I was considering using the blanking plate at the offside oil cooler position (I only have one cooler) and ducting air up from there, but I can\'t work out how to get it across to the filters unless I cut a hole in the longitudinal bulkhead; any ideas?? :wiggle Eventually I gues I\'ll end up making some heatshielding up, but before I do that I want to know how it all works! :burnout

I guess it would mostly come from behind the radiator, yes.

The stock setup draws air from in front of the radiator, a much better idea. I cant understand why people think the aftermarkets kits are better. Surely you dont want hot air from the engine bay???

Yep, I agree with your sentiment, that\'s why I wanted to work out how to get cold air in. It had the HKS kit on when I got it. From what you are saying, I guess there is some kind of ducting / opening between the rad and the slam panel, I\'ll investigate there to see if it\'s obvious. Thanks for yor help :)

I was also concerned about the cold air getting to my filter and like you I have one oil cooler on the passenger side, I used the avliable space under the drivers side light to re-posistion the filters, heres a link to it

at leaset it show you how much room the 7 has under the drivers light for the ducting you talk about.

I believe that you will find that the oem air box gets its air from the hole in the top of the intercooler duct.  I also have the same concerns as you and am in the process of doing the same thing. I do however have two oil coolers so I have taken two 2 inch dia flexible hoses from the front centre intake and up to the air filters, but this did involve cutting out a small amount of plastic from a blanking plate between the rad and the front bumper next to where the intercooler intake is.

Here are some pics, unfortunately its getting dark.
As you can see I’ve not yet sorted the pipe out properly and may yet redo it
but the theory is there, and I still need to make a heat shield.

Can now see where you are coming from :D  Keep us posted on your quest, as I have been having the same questions. If I come up with something I will let you know. :3gears-lh

I\'ve done something similar to eddie, tried to keep the track as short as i can, plus got rid of all the naff bumpy standard flex.

All this with a 3 core intercooler gives about 10deg above ambient without water injection. Plus the power steering cooler keeps the oil in the powersteering just warm.

Feels like it has lots of grunt. Just need to get some water injection.

Stock setup is that the air goes in behind the number plate, into a housing that feeds the intercooler. this housing also has a hole in the top, and that feeds another housing. This housing then feeds the air cleaner.

Have a look in my diagrams, I hope it makes sense...

Now this box feeds the air cleaner

Another way for you TT guys is to fabricate a \'Y\' pipe from yer turbos, fit an inline filter [something like the pipercross jobbie] and duct that out to fresh air, that way you wont be drawing any [hot] air from the engine bay, if you go this route you must make sure the filter / pipework is large enough  to supply sufficient air.

Most of these after market induction kits are actually worse than the stock air box, I know you guys like a bit of bling and whoooshing noises but there is a price to pay.

Thanks for the info guys, I\'ll take a closer look at the setup tonight. :)

I did a similar thing last week.  The power drop was noticeable when heat soaked before I did this, with hot air being inducted straight off the coolant rad.

I made an alloy heat shield under the air filter and cut a hole in the side of IC box to let fresh cool to the air filter. Then I covered the top hole in the IC box. Also cut out a small length of the foam strip between coolant rad and front o/s inner wing.

Felt a noticeable difference, deffinately better when heat soaked,  holds boost pressure better.
