Title: misfire/no power
Post by: jonny on September 04, 2005, 10:06:38 AM
hi there, as a new member (and new FD owner) i didnt really want my first post to be needing help but anyways here goes:

i recently purchased a \'93 FD3S (with K&N panel filter, cat back exhaust and HKS dump valve)

it was running fantastically and had sooo much more torque than my previous honda integra. unfortunatley at a BP station near durham i filled up with contaminated ultimate.

the car stalled, then wouldnt run at all! after 2 days working on the car i traced it to the fuel. drained the tank. filled with super unleaded and fired it up. white smoke poured from the exhaust but it eventually cleared.

my problem is now, when accelerating at approx 0.4 boost the car misses, backfires and has no power at all. you can creep up to 7000rpm without load but as soon as you accelerate hard it bangs and jumps.

ive since changed the fuel filter and spark plugs but this has made no difference.......

any ideas?

Maybe try resetting the ecu.....
disconnect the neg battery terminal.
press on the brake pedal for 30 secs or so
reconnect the battery.
Fire it up.

you never know.....

also see if you diconnected the knock sensor when changing the plugs....

Hope this helps

thanks for the tip, do you then have to leave it idling for a period of time to relearn idle settings etc?

It hasn\'t blocked up yor injectors ??? just a random guess.

One idea, send the bill to the BP station !

was just checking peoples ideas, but my next step was to remove the injectors and  get them tested.

i wrote a letter to BP HQ, they promptly phoned me back the next day! they\'re saying its not there fault and must be mine. ive since sent a copy of my receipt and awaiting another phone call.......

You dont need it to idle - just drive it normally.

agreed as above,  it sounds like the ecu need resetting,  only Apexi PFC ecu\'s need to learn when first connected to the car.

*quick update*

reset the ecu as explained above, took it out for a quick drive (had to be quick, no front bumper or headlight)

got full boost in 1st, 2nd and 3rd with no missing or backfire. slight hesitation once or twic but hopefully this will sort itself out once a full tank of optimax and injector cleaner are run thru.

cheers for all the rapid responses and great help!

I would take the garage to task over cost and inconvenience. How did you know it was contaminated fuel?

My local Tesco had a fuel delivery and the tanker driver put diesel in the unleaded tank, got a lot of local coverage and they had to foot the bill for around 40 cars to be flushed out and cleaned up.

I hope you didn\'t send them the \'original\' of the receipt.
