Title: First blue led\'s on a uk 8?
Post by: Ianmcurtis on September 02, 2005, 11:42:27 PM
Just fitted these, direct led replacements for the indicator repeater bulbs.

Bought from a guy in Florida, Greg, super fast shipping too. I\'ve bought other rx8 items from him previously - absolutely first class service and great comms. You could do a lot worse - and I use eBay also.

Those who know me also know my 8 is blue but I know Greg does other colour led\'s.

Ian. :wave  :)

I think you are likely to get pulled over a bit, espeically using blue

Personal opinion is they don\'t work with the orange indicators and pretty certain that displaying that colour light will be an instant fail on MoT and likely attention from BiB...

Can\'t say that I like them...  certainly not flashing, I guess it would be less of a problem if they were on continuously... but I personally think that the trend towards blue running lights on domestic vehicles is downright dangerous as people will be distracted looking for an emergency vehicle... especially at night.

BTW, have you concidered changing the interior lights, and the puddle lights to blue... this does actually work really well.

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback so far, its all welcome and here\'s my quick reply......

1. Old Bill. You are probably right (and I\'m not sure what the regs are on side repeaters), it\'s a bit like having yer wrong sized, wrong spaced letters on yer number plate, or having said plate on yer dash - for example  :D.

2. Why blue? It\'s different. I\'d guess that most folk on this forum - prob 100%,  have moded our motors in some way  :eek .

3. MOT fail. Not applicable - yet, but a bit obvious, put amber back in before the test  ;) .

Best of all, Greg will exchange them if I get any probs.

Cheers,

Ian.

You will get pulled eventually. I talk from experience we picked up a DC2 which had blue sidelights. Drove about 150 miles on the M6 before stopped, traffic cop was good about it though as we were stopping at the next services overnight & pleased ignorance to the fact they where there. He said people might be offended by them & may mistake us for them. Funny how no car that passed us slowed down or braked. Then again would you think a black DC2 was a police car.

Its illegal to have any blue flashing lights on a vehicle , unless its an emergency one.

Cheers Adam & Gerry,

I\'ve been thinking hard on this and even been looking at the 1989 Reulations. Its all a bit \'grey\' but tbh, if a bobby wanted to report it, he would. I\'ve spoken to an ex-traffic bobby mate and I think it\'ll be amber for me, its not worth the risk - but at least I got the pics and vid!

Cheers,

Ian.

Well, got to say I\'m glad I replaced the blue leds.

I heard on the news yesterday (30 Nov 05) that Hants. Police charged a grandmother for displaying a Simpsons thingy (pos hommer?) on her dash for her grandson but it was illuminated BLUE. Cost her £30 fine and had to remove it. Hants. police said that other motorists may have confused her vehicle for an emergency vehicle  :eek

You could alway\'s buy some blue tint (film or spray) that way they will be colour coded to your 8 but still flash amber, just an idea for you  ;)

any lights on the front of your car must be white (& amber for indicators)
any lights on the rear must be red (& amber for the indicators)
no lights allowed along the side of a vehicle unless they are amber indicators
but..........
now there is no law about undercar neons. this is a very grey area (no pun)
you can fit any colour lights under the car aslong as the light source is not visible................

All of this taken from a friendly policeman.........

but you cant\' say what the next one will do (especially if he\'s missed his morning coffee & bacon bap)

True BUT You can tint your lights providing they show the right colour when in use, my last car was blue and had the rear lights  and side repeaters tinted the police took me to court as they said it was illegle, the court said there\'s no law saying that tinted lights are illegle and as all my light were the the correct colour when in use they had no case against me!

^ There\'s quite a few \'nova\' drivers around hemel with various little blue light\'s lit up - not headlights, tail or indicators but certainly more than the granny who got nicked was showing.

We all know that at the end of the day it depends on the bobby. Like number plate sizes, spacing (ooer) etc. Whats important to one may not be to another BUT the rules are there - some where ;-).

Went to a cruise meet in Leicester on tuesday and the police popped in for a look around, every car that had blue led\'s was flagged down and ticketed for using these led\'s.

So be careful at night.

PS - look ok though  :chat
