Title: Single Turbo Conversion
Post by: Big Ads on August 12, 2003, 04:45:55 PM
This is going to sound stupid but what are the advantages of a single turbo conversion over the twin turbo, ok single turbo more boost= higher top end acceleration but what about lag surely the lower end boost from the twin turbo set up would give the twin a major advantage??

please enlighten my dimly lit skull....

OK here\'s a quick breakdown of what you can expect.

Big Single vs. Small Twins

Small Twins
Small twins will spool up a lot quicker than most big singles.
Small twins will produce more heat than a single due to having to work all the hard to produce bigger power.
Small twins require the rats nest under the inlet manifold. The cause of most boost problems.

Big Single
Big singles do get more lag than small twins, but you learn to drive around that lag. ;)
Big singles are less prone to boost issues, ala. rats nest of hoses.
Big singles will give off less heat due to working less, yet producing more air.

There are semi-big singles that produce good boost, without giving you too much lag.

But remember that if you go single you need to sort out the ECU and intercooler just for starters.

Single turbo produces more power not that laggy unless you go really big. I would guess it lowers the temp somewhat under the hood as there is quite a bit more room compared to twin setup when fitetd. You get rid of alot of vacuum lines and the complex twin turbo setup which can be a pig to
troubleshoot boost problems, just ask Martin Yates

Cheaper to maintain a single rather than twins.  Gets rid of the nasty turbo change over.

Has anyone supercharged (or is it possible to) and single turbo\'d a rex?  would this not eliminate the lag from a single??

The easier way to remove lag is NOS, but you have to be VERY sinsible when setting that giggle gas up.

just out of interest will an rx7 with a T04R or T04E single turbo kit on with all the associated components be much lighter or heavier than a twin turbo rx7 with the "rats nest" ??

Lighter. Can be much, much lighter if the install is done right.

yep me going for a Garrett GT35/40 Ball Bearing turbo, Its suppossed to be quite quick spooling up from around 3000rpm.
You will probably lose about 15 LBS of weight by getting rid of the Rats nest. Fed up with sticking solenoids of the twin turbo setup

Its a custom one made by horsepowerinabox in Oz, I\'m going for the whole kit supplied by them with a nice big external wastegate, whoohoo, that will finally lay rest to those pesky Skylines on the strip

Good, I know some people use a 12a mainfold with the gt35/40. What other mods are doing, fuel system wise etc?

Blitz, I can get a deal from the company that makes the stuff for HorsePowerInABox....

The price I was being quoted was $5300 AUS = Circa £2200 + Duty and VAT.

The kit includes all that you will need from speaking to the guy.
