Title: LED legality
Post by: Archbish on August 12, 2003, 02:54:23 PM
Does anyone know the legality of using LED\'s as rear lights and in rear light clusters??

Cheers

OJ

p.s. see clive - I can do serious stuff on occasion...:D

AFAIK LEDs need to be behind a  diffuser lens, as you must be able to see then from an angle. There\'s also the issue of E marking...

Is the E marking for the entire unit??  I suppose it is...  Therefore, it\'s unlikely that custom rear lights would be road legal...

I suppose as long as they are clear and not distracting, they shouldn\'t attract unwanted attention...

((p.s. hassle clive with "OJ for Rotary Chit-Chat moderator emails...))

I hate to say it, but there are road legal led rear lights available.

I know, because several models of buses now use them - please don\'t yawn.....

If you struggle finding some OJ , I\'m sure I can send you a copy of Bus and Coach Buyer or Coach & Bus Week.

Reading that might dampen some of your humour though, LOL!

Regards

Max

Jags, well s-types anyway, have l.e.d rear lights as standard. bit annoying when the bulbs go to be honest as you have \'dots\' missing :)

well the plan is to use the lenses, but completely change the shape and positions of the lights emitted.  I\'m currently working on the front indicators/side lights, and should have them done for trax...

it\'s gonna be so pretty...!! *grin*

I\'ve smoothed my side repeaters off, and have mounted 3 little LEDs in the wingmirrors - they hardly notice, yet make the car look a lot tidier.  The side reflectors are also gone, and hopefully, within a few days, the font lights will look MUCH better...

Sorry about the size of the pic, but this shows the smoothed side repeater, and you can just make out the dots that are the indicators on the wing mirror.

There are three LED\'s mounted vertically, and they are brighter than the stock side repeaters.  I reckon it\'s a lot smoother
