Title: Help....
Post by: ska on September 01, 2005, 01:28:45 AM
Hey, just in the process of buying a \'75 RX4 saloon, its currently got a 2L montrose engine with autobox on it. Getting the original 2.3 engine, manual gearbox, radiator, oil cooler, carb, engine manifold, alternator and other fittings including a spare steering wheel!!!! hehe, anyways, needs a little work on the sillls, could do with a respray and the interior needs some attention so once I collect the car and the parts I\'ll be needing help at some point I\'m sure!! So any help anyone can give would be greatly appriciated!! Can I start with asking if there are any good sources for original parts? Retrimming materials etc? Hopefully one day mine will look as good as yours!!!

Cheers
Colin

Hi Colin.
I have a few bookmarks for parts. ( I will post them tonight) Also there are some very helpful people on here who can source parts. I have managed to get almost everythign i need for my RX-2 (so far).

Well done on buying this car. Whereabouts are you?

I am in a similar situation with my RX-2, it currently has a ford engine and gearbox, I am going to fit a 1 st gen RX-7 engine and Gearbox.

Thanks goodness your car has gone to someone who wants to put the Rotary back in. !!!  :-)))

Thanks for the reply and the links later! :p Im near edinburgh not seen anything like this car round here, closest I have seen was a mk2 escort mexico! I figured seeing as the rotary was included in the price i may as well put it back in! Plus itll  give me a manual box again!!! heh also anyone know any good classic car insurers???

Cheers.

My RX-2 is with AON. £80 year fully comp.  I would refurbish that engine first, - get hold of the Bruce Turrentine rebuild video. In fact that video shows you how to test an engine before stripping it, so that would be good to do anyway.

Yeah put the rotor back it! Sounds like it will probably need a rebuild first (if it\'s been taken out of the car then that\'s usually the case). Which engine did it come with 12A or 13B? btw the original engine isn\'t 2.3 - the cubic capicity seems to be roughly doubled over here (for tax/insurance reasons I assume). Can\'t wait to see some pics!!!

 :burnout

edit: Matin you just beat me!!

I have a parts list for my RX-2 , I suggest you search ebay and get one. Amazingly, Mazda still can supply many old RX parts, I think because they used the same parts in later models.

So, Mazda is still a good source, too.

Any chance we can sign you up as a member ? :-))

Nice one!! Well, Ive parted with the cash........and now I dunno what to do first
the interior?
the engine?
the exterior?

Either way I can get it dropped of at my mates garage if its the engine getting done first, but if Im doing the interior, Ill want it at mine, cos thats something I can fix myself!! Another thing......it could do with a respray, its quite faded.....do I do that before the engine? (I guess not cos theres chance for damage!!) Do I do it before the interior (so all the hard work isnt undone by some nutter in the sprayshop!) so confusing!!! Any ideas about the best order to do this?? Cheers

Because I am a Rotary nut, my priority would be to get that Rotary engine running and fitted. Then get the respray done, then do the interior later.

Congratulations on a fabulous car and I hope you can make it to a meet some time.

well the cars running, but on the montrose engine.....and as people have told me, it would need a rebuild, which involves more time and money than the others! lol having such a hard time finding a classic car insurer thatll take someone of my age...but thats besides the point!

So how old are you ska? I used houghton\'s have you tried them?.

RE: your engine, give Carl hayward a call you never know.  a repsray could be costly if done right and the interior well its cosmetic unless a herd of cows took a dump on ya back seat :D

You gotta get ya rotor in the car 1st I reckon. You could get the engine bay sprayed while its empty though.

Congrats on your new beast by the way.

Looks like the oldschool is growing quite fast anymore................ :D

I\'m only a young thing at 21, so obviosuly insurance companys LOVE me!! But the quotes Ive got so far from various people - adrian flux, budget etc, all around 1k, which is less than theyll insure me on a 1.1 punto, go figure!! lol As far an the engine is concerned, I\'ll give him a call and see what he says, I mean I\'m all the way up in scotland so its a fair distance to get it shifted! I\'ve a few mates mechanically inclined so we shall see. One of them told me if I was putting rotor back in to go for the 13b, which I can only assume is the turbo or something? The spray is no problem cos again, friend works in a spray shop, kinda handy!! The interior, its just a few rips on the headlining and mite retrim the door cards to match the roof.....maybe! But my reasoning for that was it can be done while I await the funds to do the rest!! And thanks for the welcome, you\'ve all made me feel very welcome despite being such a newbie to the world of rotory....and restoration in general!  :god

I\'ll dig out my policy and PM you for an insurance contact.

I\'m sure Carl has/had a 13b for sale not so long back I\'m unsure about the condition though. Failing that a rebuild on the 12A wouldnt be too costly or you could get it ported aswell  :cool, nothing wrong with 12A\'s you\'d be suprised if they\'re done right have a look at Tims purple projectile he\'s done some pretty cool times plus I\'m sure theres other RX7\'s running the 12A\'s I think Don pamponini\'s running 1 aswell. Its great that you have a few mates in key area\'s, spray painters etc.

I\'m looking forward to seeing the pic\'s of your chariot. I must admit I\'m a bit of a sucker for the 4 door variety.

Much appriciated! I think a little modification would be interesting!! Initially the plan was to buy a punto (a friend and i have an audio installation and general mod business) as a show car, but i saw this and thought bugger it, id rather have this than a car you see on average 27 times a day! Back to the point....as soon as i get the guy to drop it off ill have pics up and on here! dont worry bout that! May go in search of a 3 door eventually, as a 2nd car of course :p

Quote from: Martiny12A = 1146cc, 13B = 1308cc

10A = 982cc

My insurance policy rates my 10A as 1964cc and it is well know that Rotaries put out roughly double their cubic capicity in power output so I guess this makes sense is a crazy kinda way!

Post by: Martiny on September 05, 2005, 09:10:06 PM
3.2 is really completely WRONG!  Some tw4ts, like the Government, decided a 12a = a 2.3, a 13B = 2.4 or 2.6. I have never heard of 3.2 before!.

Hey, unless he\'s given you a 4 Rotor like the one that won Le Mans?
