ive read the threads on here and cant seem to get any conclusion to what oil to use.
HELP!!!!
Tar
nick :D
Mate its a debate that will go on forever, all you can do is read the threads and make your choice.
Noe running Royal Purple in Lexus430, Chloe\'s KA, FD, and 1st gens, as will I in the RX4.
to be honest - i use Castrol 10/40
yeah castrol 10/40.... that was the easy bit for me. I cant change my oil because I cant get under the car to drain the damn oil  dunno what Im going to have to do :(
I also use castrol 10/40

dave i had my oil done last week, i bought the stuff for about £16 and had a import garage change it and they charged me £42 for that and to adjust the handbrake. they are in helpringham near sleaford if you need to get yours done and i thought that price was pretty reasonable :bandit
If I bought the oil £42 is a tad steep for someone to change the oil for me.... In fact Id be rather annoyed at having to pay that just for someone to drain the oil and stick some more in
youve been had mate....lol ;)
I know Helpringham though, play footy there every now and then. :)
my local garage does it for a tenner,if I supply the oil
It\'s a quick simple job, so should cost too much for a garage to do
thats more like it :D
Id do it myself if I could get under the car. Im not that lazy ;) You could argue jack the car up but a/ the jack wont fit under the car either ;) and b/ all the oil will rush to the wrong side of the motor to drain out of the plug hole ;)
Getting the oil filter off to, is a bit of a pain! Oddly though, little, if any oil, actually drops out of the filter when it is lifted away. Everytime I do it, I get ready for the expected half pint of oil dropping out of the filter!
Would have thought that\'d be easy, pretty simple to get at so wouldnt have thought it\'d be too hard. I like you would have expected to lose alot of oil everywhere though

Oh yes, classic excuses! :rollin

Well yes, if it isn\'t on too tightly. If it is, then getting the chain and ratchet in there can be a little tight. As you say though, not a big problem.
Hammer a screw driver through it :D
I volunteer your car to try that on! :evillaugh
(PS mind the ABS pipes!) :rollin
There is no reason for an oil filter to be on anymore than hand tight. and make sure you put oil on the O ring of the filter before you tighten it.
The reason you dont get oil pouring out of it is because the oil filter is on top of the engine facing down the way, and the oil is at the bottom of the engine due to gravity ;)

Ah! that man - he talks sense! :cool

This is the best way to do it, all the oil drains out and you won\'t get it everywhere.
What I am looking for it an adapter to move the oil filter, cucso do them but I can\'t find them for sale anywhere.
davegttph1 - Someone told me a while ago that if you buy your oil and filter from ATC then they will do the oil change free of charge. ATC is the company with the yellow logo, I think it\'s ATC but could be ATS !?!
There\'s one in Melton BTW. might be worth giving them a ring
regards
Gareth
Yeah ATS.... although they do tyres IIRC not servicing. This we have 1 in town actually. might be worth giving them a bell then, thanks :)
yeah think they do tyres, exhausts and all sorts really. Let us know how you get on if you ring them.
cheers

:xconfused I\'ve probably got one of the lowest Rex\'s and I can still get the sissor jack under the front jacking point. TBH I only realised this recently as before I\'d drive up onto a 2" slab on concrete which just allowed me to get the trolley jack under. You could always try that. :)
I dont have the jack that should have come with the car so thats a none starter. Im going to have to buy a trolley jack I think. Need 1 this weekend so its probably a good idea to get 1 anyhow.... still like you say Id need to drive onto something to get the rex clearance BUT surely if the cars jacked up all the oil will run to the other side of the engine and not drain?
OK so mines not lowered or has any after market body kit on, but what I have found, is with the 2 trolley jacks I have, they do not do under the car until it is raised an inch or two. I hate using the Mazda jack, it just seems to not fit well, and scratch the paint on the jack point. So what I now do, is use a small hydraulic jack, that just fits under the front toe hook. Its enough to lift the car that inch or 2, then the trolley jack goes under to the sub frame, where Mazda recommend you jack from. The car is therefore raised evenly, and is not leaning (apart from backwards, of course!). A couple of axle stands for safety, whip out the drain plug, and collect your oil! Guess you could always lower the car again, to get that little extra out, but not sure it will make too much difference anyway!
i drive mine onto breeze blocks first to get the jack under
davegttph1 - why dont you have a look in the members section for the formoto ( or summat like that ) engine drail valve
could be a good idea for you

stu
Ive seen that valve thing. it was on a group buy wasnt it? still not much help cause the drain bucket doesnt fit under the car so it needs to get raised somehow at somepoint to drain the oil :(
If youy turn the wheels on full lock you can slide a trolly jack under and jack from there, once up axel stand and do other side.
Guys, this lady on eBay sell\'s 75mm ali trolley jacks, ~£150 but well worth it if you plan on doing a lot of work yourself.

I got one for my Lotus after no trolley jack I had would fit with a lot of sodding about, even a halfords one that I removed the front wheels and dismantled as much as possible wouldn\'t fit and was very dodgy!
This will fit under pretty much anything, has a nice rubber pad to protect what it\'s lifting and if you can\'t get it under I have no idea how you run the car on the road ;)
HTH,
Mark

Does that mean there\'s no one-way valve on the filter? If not, does this mean that the engine is being starved on every start-up, until the filter is filled? :xconfused Makes a good case for relocating the filter to be the right way up!
