Title: Just fitted my new silenced decat mid pipe
Post by: Steve Burnett on August 30, 2005, 08:26:46 PM
I decided the previous straight through mid pipe was too loud so I decided to buy a silenced decat.
It was about time I fitted it so tonight was the night. Went well apart from that one bolt that decided to **** me off a little
No skint hands etc but then again it is a simple job.
I was surprised that there is a small gap between the metal flanges after it was all put back. There are no gaskets, and was told I did not need any??? The car stinks under due to the gap, but then the gasses are escaping at the mid pipe so when it come to MOT time it should pass as all the gasses are out before it get to the back box  :D
I was a little unsure about my jaking points so took some pictures. Have a look and let me know if they were fine.

Not sure about those jacking points mate!

I fitted a 3" mid pipe last week and like you say it is quite loud,  how does the silenced 1 sound compared, still barky?

The flanges should be nice and tight, I used gaskets on mine, otherwise you\'re gonna lose the effect of the silencer if it\'s barking through the flange gap!

Have you got a boost controller, how much boost you running?

Stock boost. No boost controller. When I check the commander there is no sign of overboost.
The exhaust has made a BIG difference. A lot less noise.
Where can I get some exhaust gaskets? Halfords???
What jack points should I have used?

The jack points are all fine except for the diff. I think I remember someone on here broke theirs like that, (or it could have been on the MX-5 forum).

Hi Steve,

If you use exhaust paste that should be fine. Just loosen off the flanges and smear a good amount on the parts that meet and retighten, has been fine on mine for that last year...

Before you do this please jack the car up properly mate, dont use the diff. The casing could collapse.

See this thread mate

Donato, I was looking for that post last night but never found it! Thankfully all seems well though. I took it out for a blast last night and nothing horrible was heard!

Dont worry, your not going mental Steve, i made it a sticky this morning..as i thought it might be usefull to others.

Basically the diff can be dodgy. Your jack can go right through them... especially the one you have as the head of the jack is quite small..same weight on a smaller surface area = increased pressure and risk of the jack going through!

Glad its all sorted and fine mate!
