Title: De-cat pipe, emissions and MOT !!!
Post by: G@NDY on August 24, 2005, 11:31:20 AM
Just had an interesting phone call, with a fellow at my local import specialists garage where i take my car for its MOT. I had asked him when i get my car de-catted-ified can i bring the her up and see how much over the legal limit she is!, just so i definately know to take my cat when the dreaded MOT is due and have them swap it over. And he said that there is no way it would fail????? surprised i was??? he said that because of the airpump and the revs they test at, makes the rex a decat classed car, meaning that there are no emission limits!!!!!! Confused i was??? He was adamant (hmmmmmm good spelling) that even mazda had confirmed this? (i dont know why i have begun to sound like yoda??)
Not meaning to sound rude i just accepted this story, and now i wished i had whiped the cat off earlier!
Has anyone heard of this before?? If anyone is having trouble with emissions and the dreaded MOT and are in or around sunny Lincolnshire, then maybe you should book it in with these helpful fellows! There name is Prestige Vehical Imports and there number is 01529421615

And praise for the de-catted massive :rollin

 Regards Andy

What year is your car mate ?
Anything thats pre 95 gets tested as a non cat.

Generally speaking the pre 1995 emissions are so much more lax that you can decat your car and still pass.  :)

Pip said similar to me when I asked about decatting mine. Can\'t remember exactly what he said but it was along the lines of pre 95 imported cars won\'t have a problem as they are classed as non cat cars. He said he could give me a copy of the paperwork for my MOT station if I wanted, but it turned out I needed an engine rebuild so I\'m taking it to him to get a service at MOT time anyway so I didn\'t take it.

This link explains it

I\'ve got a friendly MOT station and when we went through the database the UK RX7 was listed but not the import version so I would say make sure you watch them do this and point this fact out if they try to test as a UK car (unless thats what you have).

hi can anyone help?  really confused i have a 92 3rd gen with a decat, pfc, ect.. on a new rebuild (wgt).  has all recently been turned up after the run in period and has failed its mot big time on emissions.  (two gas test)   co= 6.17  (max 3)  hydro carbons=1500 (1200 max).  the car passed fine last year with the same mods (except rebuild) .  can i adjust any thing with the commander to help me out or is it best leaving it to the pro`s ????

cheers paul

the commander can adjust the setting but a either find friendly tester or try one of the metal substrate cats they use in the states it drops the emmissions and still gives good flow and doesnt need an airpump as they just need to get hot.they weld into the midpipe..i know a company that sells them over here but they come from the states.for info go onto rx7club.com or nopistons.com and search for metallic substrate cats

mine i a 1992 model and have been told by Ross at dragon that the manifold has a crack in ot meaning more emisions, i assumed this meant it would fail an MOT, am i correct or would it probably pass?? or does it depend on how bad the crack is?

Speak to Pip regarding the MOT regulations for imports as they are less stringent. He will be able to get a copy of the tests (and results) needed for your car as your MOT station are probably using the wrong figures (ie figures for piston engines or for UK car). Pip decatted my car and I asked about emisions beforehand and he said there shouldn\'t be a problem.

mine passed 2nd time on my MOT last week . failed on a suspension nut thing and number plate light lol .. which i just tighened up and passed straight away
When the monkey did my test he did it as a normaly car ... but the owner bloke came storming over and said it has a differnet test to do .. and basicly they just tested it for 10 seconds on idle and all ok . and mine is running quite rich as can smell the fuel all the time when i stop .
