Title: Electric PS?
Post by: Grizzly on August 21, 2005, 03:15:08 PM
Can anyone shed some light on this form of Power steering?

Basicly is it any good? Is it still variable? and is it a bad job to do?

I am prescently Running a Manual rack on my T2 which i think if ok, its made it a bit harder to turn (oviously) but i keep reading about Electric Ps so it\'s got my intrest.

Ta

Chris

The RX8 uses electric power steering.
That is all I know, but it is progressive and feels great when driving.

Chris,    If you have a stock TII PAS rack put back in your car, you can pay 75- 100 quid for a 2nd hand citroen saxo pump.   Loose the headlight washer pump and bottle and make a bracket up to take the citroen bracket on the pump so you keep the original rubber mounts..  Block off the smaller of the TII fluid lines.  The fatter one will go either over or under the chasis rail and screw straight into the pump with no mods at all.  You just need to connect the fluid return which needs a rubber hose (jubilee clip is fine as its low pressure) from the pump to the return on the rack (the one that used to loop around the front to cool the fluid). Its as simple as that.  The pump comes with the small wiring loom and relay that you need.  Its basically a decent fused power,  40 amp should do it,  an earth and a switch for the relay which i have put in my car and from the ignition so i can switch it off but cant leave it running with the ignition off.

It is not speed sensitive now but works really well,  i think my car has a new rack recently fitted as the steering is nice and tight which also helps.  It isnt to light like the old EGI\'s were but you can still park with ease i would say its on the firm side but i prefer it that way.  It will fit in the engine bay depending on your mods but its out of the way under the wing.  If you position it right you can get the fluid refil which is attached to the pump on later model pumps to poke through the h/L wahser jet refil.   The earlier pumps had a seperate refil bottle which would be even easier to fit as its smaller and you can fit the refil/resovoir bottle in a convenient place.

I have fitted to an FD with bigger wheels on and we have it on the 20B FD which has 19" 245 tyres on it and it copes well.

Its well worth it, will tae you a day to fit if that and will cost you less than a 100 quid.

regards
tony

You could also use a pump from an MR2

Cheers, thats a good write up, Going of what Carl has said if i do a little research it is possable to get an electric pump that is Progressive.

Antnicuk, Have you ever driven a T2 with a Manual rack fitted? how does it compaire?

I\'m just a little in too minds, I like the Manual rack but i find its more turns lock to lock than my PS rack? the stock PS rack was good if a little light (wanted turning down a bit) and the PS rack without the pump and fluid has the right Lock to lock but is too heavy (plus i don\'t like the idea of a PS rack with no fluid in)

the non ps racks are probably lower geared, hence the longer lock.  With the citroen saxo pump the rack is not as light as stock,  its quit sporty and nice and firm.  If your TII was too light at speed you may find that the speed correction wasnt working which is a common fault.   Mine was quite firm at speed before i swapped,  but its about the same all the time now.

If you were to get a progressive one to work you would need the correct sender from the speedo or gearbox. That might be a challenge.

i put the non assisted rack in my car and you do notice the extra bit of turn you have to put on. i was very used to the stock p/s and i would turn the wheel  the amount i needed to get round a bend. with the man/rack i would turn the same amount and go wide. i am now used to it and it is no prob at all. driving allong is no problem but doing lock to lock while trying to park is hard.

p/s is extra weight and therefor slow, just like antnicuk. :evillaugh

I am not keen on Drag runs. One day. Not many people have seen my cars let alone seen it go down the strip :) (i\'m not one for driving any distance as they would say no faith in ones work)

"you didnt answer my question about removing the exhaust sleeves"

Urm must have missed that.

I got family here from cyprus at the mo so i couldnt get to the pod at the wekend.  They go back next monday so i will be going on the th.   with or with out 3rd gear!!!    If i\'m nice to the clutch in first and second, it might let me get to third gear without slipping!
