Title: Stock intercooler mod?
Post by: Trevrx on August 19, 2005, 07:58:06 PM
I\'m trying to think of simple ways to reduce intake temps.

With the stock panel filter, wouldn\'t most of the air entering be drawn through the filter and virtually none through the Intercooler rad? (the air taking the route of least resistance)

I\'ve got a large cone filter, with a square hole left in the top of the air scoop thing, taped over with black tape in the pic.  I thought by closing off the hole, most of the air would be drawn thru the I/R via the cone filter.  It certainly doesn\'t feel worse under WOT when hot than it did with the hole open, if anything holds .7 bar slightly better.

Does this sound a good idea or bad lol?  Any other suggestions?

Also, I\'m gonna make a heat shield to cover the rad hose under the filter, any suggestions for what size and what material to use?

Not sure if you get any benefit or not, your ic is getting extra air through so should be working a bit better, but its getting hotter air to start with as theres no cold air feed to the filter...so what you gain you may lose again if you see what I mean.

Having a heat shield around the filter, and maybe a seperate cold air feed into the heat shielded area, that should give you a nice improvement.

Or just fit water injection :cool

would be a good idea to make up a heatshield, i did on mine and after a run the filters and pipes where still cool to the touch, where as normally they where very hot, and some point i will make up a cold air feed as well, probably a scoop of somesort in the nose cone piped up to the filters

heres a pic

The stock intercooler actually does a better job than you think

While I was doing the test runs for my CO2 system I recorded the results of the intercooler on its own

it was about 22c on the day

off boost temps before intercooler 56c ish after was about 30c this was traveling at 60mph

on boost the temps before the intercooler went up to 106c but came down to 50c this was foot to the floor at full boost

Still a touch on the high side but alot better than I imagined it would be , I never got to test the CO2 as after a second or so the pipe after the solenoid blew apart again , looks like I need hydrolic hose

Incidentley this is with HKS filters , heat shielding and the air splitter removed and the hole covered , not got the cold air feed done yet

Its not terrible ie does the job (for a stockish set-up), but just a huge difference when you go to a front mount or WI.

How did you get on with your co2 spray in the end?

I\'ve been meaning to update the CO2 thread but keep forgeting , got it all hooked up and working just need some stronger pipe , pipe I got seemed fine but when activated properly I think it froze the nylon tube and caused it to blow under pressure

Sorry for the hijack  :o

The stock IC is not good for 3 reasons.

Poor cooling efficiency
High pressure drop/restrictive
Plastic burstable end tanks.

A good SMIC or FMIC will really give you an increase that you could feel.

I never thought the stock intercooler was adequate and still don\'t , however it is more effective than I imagined it to be , going to go down the charge cooler route eventually

Hey Tintin, I am not taking a shot at you or anything :), it\'s just that the general concensus is that the stock IC is "woefully inadequate" (http://robrobinette.com/reliabiltiy.htm) that\'s all.

I suppose if you are staying completely stock then you could say it\'s perfectly fine. I ran with a stock IC for over a year in Mauritius and the car was running ok. I also did the same mod to the IC ducting that you did (used aluminum sheet) and has a CAI system and to be honest felt little or no improvement.

Dont worry mate didn\'t think you were havin a go or anything , just saying everyone says how bad the stock intercooler is or interheater as some call it bu it actually does a semi decent job , like you said if your staying stock then it is probably up to the job

Still going to take mine out when the funds are available , get ready for my single turbo

I fitted a heat shield yesterday, anyone that hasn\'t done it yet.. DO IT!

Can deffo feel the difference when pulling hard at 6k rpm.
Thinking about a de-cat now :)

heatshields looking good mate, nice one.

How does the filter feel after a drive, is it cooler to the touch than before? really must get around to doing this myself

Well... before it was red hot to the touch, now it\'s just hot or warm!

I was feeling bad power loss pulling hard in 3rd / 4th between 5.5 / 7k rpm.
Kind of dropping off boost from 0.7 to 0.6. Sucking in hot air straight off the coolant rad.

Now it\'s a shed load better, had a great spin tonite didn\'t want to come home :)
