Title: What do you think of these readings?
Post by: Ricco_04 on August 18, 2005, 11:31:36 PM
Got the old APEXi installed and up and running tonight.  Did all the idle learning stuff and then took her out for a spin. Looked t the Commander and thought the knock looked a little high.  These are my readings, what do you guys & gals recon?

InjDuty - 50.9
IgnT Ld - 44
IgnT Tr - 44
Eng.Rev - 5395
Speed - 128
Boost - +0.80
Knock - 141
Wtr Temp - 93

Stock UK spec car, 95 RON fuel (I have been told this is still ok to use?) I currently have a problem preventing my second turbo spooling so the boost is just going to be the 1st tubby.

Cheers peeps, Ricco.  :)

knock is quite high, although it cant always be trusted. Their guideline is anything over 60 may be a detonation.

Is that a one-off number or is it consistently getting that high?

Even on a uk car id stick to higher octane...up to you...but you\'d get better knock protection and prob better running too. Especially relevant if you have stock intercooler set-up, as im sure you know temps can get awful high. Sitting in traffic for a bit and a bad tank of 95 could result in nastiness...higher octane stuff would give you a bit of a safety margin.

If your getting consistently high knock readings be interesting to try a high octane fuel see what effect it has on them?

As Scuttle said it could be the fuel, I always stick 98 ron in there and only 97 if I have to. Give it a go on a tank of 98.

Thanks for the reply guys.  I think ill go with your advice and change the fuel.  I did also see some one els\'s results and as they ran the car more and more then it knocked at a lower peak each time? Also read that the sensor could be loose and rattling but preety sure this is not the case.

Will I have to do the idle learning thing again (I dont mind doing this - I want to do whats best)  If so how do I reset the ECU? Do I have to : Disconnect the negative battery terminal and then hold the brake pedal down for about 9 seconds?

Cheers

When Lit

If lit, there is a possibility that either the map sensor, throttle position sensor, intake air temp sensor, or water temp sensor is damaged.

When Flashing

If flashing in 0.1second intervals for 3 times the vehicle may be detonating. Its only kncok if your accelerating if its on the run down or idle I wouldn\'t worry about it that much.

If flashing for 0.5 second intervals, the injectors may be at maximum capacity. If the injectors are at maximum capacity the injectors may not be able to deliver the required amount of fuel to the engine.

Ok I seem to have gone wrong somewhere.  It says in the instructions that is any equipment is malfunctioning then the engine check lamp will illuminate - It didnt so I carried on.

The green light stays on all of the time (even with driving lights off) and does not flash even when the knock reading goes that high.  The knock peaks at over 130 under 85%+ throttle, stays around 70 when slowly accelerating, 30-40 when maintaining speed and 0-2 when idleing. The screen has never flashed at all.

I guess this means that there is something malfunctioning then?

Green light?

I was talking about your \'red\' heat light on your dash not the Apexi commander itself (think thats what your talking about).

I sometimes get 140 knock on start up. It only happens if you start teh car after its just been run (like if you stop to fill up petrol then turn the engine on again when leaving). Also I get flshes on the rundown occasionaly.

Maybe the UK cars are wired differently to the imports so the Apexi isn\'t woking as it should? [maybe someone could clarify this]

Have you changed and checked your oil and filter? Also have you checked your coolant. Higher Octane fuel should help keep knock away. what mods do yuo have on the car? the base map for the Apexi is for a decatted rx-7 apparently. I dont know if this includes filters, downpipe, or intercooler changes. The best bet is to have it mapped specificly for your car that way you know its running how it should.

Im not a proffesional and only saying this with my limited knowlage. If its worrying you then have it checked out for piece of mind.

Good luck, hope you find out whats wrong.

Chris

I wouldnt worry *too* much, my apexi gives me readings of 100+ knock when just pulling off gently anything over 30mph I get a reading of about 130ish. foot to the floor Id get a reading of about 160 seen 175 before....

Ive seen a couple of other people saying they regualary get high numbers too, must be a cause/pattern somewhere, dave is yours a uk car too? maybe its a difference in knock sensors, uk type giving higher readings? clutching at straws a bit i know :)

Even thought its a UK car you are running a Jap ECU so stick with the high octane stuff.

Best thing to do is get it mapped by one of the tuners, then you will be sure thats evrything is working fine, or if something isnt they will tell you without have to take it for a thrash to check it everytime...  :) good luck.

The stealth has a knock reading upto 120 just by free revving, I\'ve changed the timing, plugs, leads and it stills knocks exactly the same  I think i\'ll have to order a second hand knock sensor from tim and try that, the car runs sweet and the afr\'s on boost are below 11 all through the rev range. If a new sensor doesn\'t sort it I think i\'ll just disconnect it:)

QuoteGreen light?

I was talking about your \'red\' heat light on your dash not the Apexi commander itself (think thats what your talking about).
Thanks for the input chris.  Yes your right, I ment the commander! Im a silly ass! While I was driving the heat light was off.

The heat light always comes on when I turn the car off and leave the ignition â€" Is that what they mean by its telling me there IS a fault?

QuoteHigher Octane fuel should help keep knock away. what mods do yuo have on the car? the base map for the Apexi is for a decatted rx-7 apparently. I dont know if this includes filters, downpipe, or intercooler changes. The best bet is to have it mapped specificly for your car that way you know its running how it should.
Im gonna put in some octane booster to finish off this batch of fuel and then try super and optimax to see what readings it gives me.  The plan was to take to WGT when my next service and mot is due, have a decat downpipe fitted and fully mapped.  The only mods I have are a back box and a tax disc holder!! (so still both cats in)

QuoteEven thought its a UK car you are running a Jap ECU so stick with the high octane stuff.
Thanks Keiron. Sounds entirely possible, gonna put some booster in it to finish off the tank and use better fuel next time.

And thanks to all else â€" im gonna post up the new readings (if that’s ok?) when I have given her a run with octane booster!

Cheers, Ricco.

Ok been into town today and got some octane booster (had to settle for Nitrox cause I couldnt find any Millers.) Put 3/4 into my half tank ful of 95ron and I have 142 knock - worse!!  :reallymad

I think im gonna ring pip and get it looked at - I have about 80miles to travel to see him so does anyone know If I can get that figure reduced?  I have doneabout 40miles so far and hoped it would settle down.

It also seems WORSE now apart from when im accelerating or on idle!

Looks like im booking her in to see Mr. Specialist!  ;)

Think that would be the best bet matey, has it been showing this much knock since you first installed a commander or has it only recently gone high?
If its always been high I would say its likely nothings wrong with it other than a knock sensor fault, sure if it was knocking a larger problem would have developed by now, but like you say let Pip have a butchers or at least give you his opinion, be able to put your toe down without worrying then :)

BTW not sure how good octane booster is compared to higher octane fuel, I know its a few peoples opinions on here that it doesnt do a lot.

Never used it myself so dont know, just what I heard so thought id pass it on :)

If I remenmer (which is pretty dam unlikely for me!) then I am going to ring Pip on monday to get booked in and for a bit of advice.  If he can tell me anything usefull over the phone then ill post it, otherwise will have to wait till he\'s had a butchers.

True, I think higher octane fuel is better - have to take some of it out before I go to WGT and use some of Shells finest!  :cool

Thank you all for your help  :wave   :cheers

Had a word with Pip today (yes I remembered!  :cool  ) He kinda put me at rest. I described when I was getting what readings for the knock and he said he was almost certain that there was something loose or malfunctioning or else the engine would probably have blown up!!

He agreed that octane booster wouldn’t be all that great and to put in super anyway (for all the reasons from you guys.  :god  )  So I\'m temp booked in on Sept 15th to get the necessary replaced. If I had more money then I would have more stuff done (spoke to him about trust downpipe, sports cat and a session on the rollers for a remap) but I\'m definitely heading in the right direction!

Keep you posted what they find wrong.

Rich.
