Title: engine rebuilds?
Post by: hazzarami on August 17, 2005, 01:45:12 PM
Hi,

I am currently in the process of buying a 94 rx7 type-R, which is totally standard apart from a HKS exhaust. I have seen a lot of rex\'s with rebuilt engines and wondered if this is a common or essential thing after a certain mileage? mine has only done 41,000 miles.

cheers.

It goes with the terrortory of having a rotary engine. It is not unknown (Read: It\'s quite common!) to require a Rotary engine to be rebuilt in its lifetime. Its not necassarily down to the mileage of the engine - it could just be sheer bad luck when it throws a tantrum (And an apex seal!). Oh, and mind those water seals too!

Thanks nikp............when i get hold of my car i\'ll give it a good once over and hopefully tender loving care from then on will reduce the risk of a new engine!

PS.   becoming a full member when the car arrives

Good stuff! However, treating it with the utmost care and attention and servicing it regularly is a great thing to do, but will not guarentee it not to require a rebuild at some time in the future. What most people say is, if it has not had a rebuild, then budget for it requiring one one day.

I got a low milage (45K) example several years ago now thinking it wouldn\'t need a rebuild. The ring square seals go with age and how the engine has been treated (i.e. if it\'s been left flooded for a period of time). Mine was imported for me and the history was unknown. needless to say the ring square seals went within 10 months. They last about 10 years apparently. A \'94 car should need doing soon is my guess.

Still if you do need the engine rebuilding then take it to Carl. He did a fantastic job on mine and it\'s a real joy to drive now it\'s ported etc. Shame about the brakes and shocks though.

I managed to get a 12 month parts and labour warranty thrown in, so if anything is going to go wrong - i hope it does it within a year!!!
