2 weeks ago my rad split, (small hairline fractrure). I also noticed that some water also escaped out of the top pipe that joins to the water pump.
The car didnt over heat as not much water was lost. The oil pressure is also fine.
I ordered a replacment and fitted it on saturday. Ran a compresion test up to 13psi. There where no leeks on the system at all at this point.
I took it for a drive for about 15 mins to let the temp get up and checked for leeks. I found that the top pipe connecting to the water pump is still doing the same. Its a very small amount though.
I took the top pipe off and made sure that there is nothing in it to cause the leek.
I have also noticed that the overflow rubber pipe was hot and the overflow bottle was luke warm.
The water is completly clear, no oil and the when checking the oil it is fine, no water residue.
I originaly thought that the problem could be with the water pump, but they leek when they are on there way out and it isnt leeking. Could it be clogged up internaly? Also i have noticed the pully\'s slipping when driving, could it be that the water pump is not being driven because of this?
I spoke to Jimmy\'s and was told that the engine could be pressurising the system, hopefully not but if this was the case then surely there would be some kind of contamination?
Sorry for all the questions but id love and answer.
Thanks
Dave
you say that it is leaking around the plastic water pump outlet hose?, this is where the thermostat goes i\'m assuming?, if so, the only way i could stop mine leaking there was to replace the rubber around thermostat.
If its pressurising the system, it will blow up your water hoses like balloons and they will pop off. The over flow being hot is ok, it the expanded water going from the rad to the overflow bottle once the car reaches temp.
The main giveaway for a water seal failiure on a TII i have found is that it wont like starting when it is warm. When you turn it off the water pressure forces water into the combustion chamber and put the spark out. From cold it will be ok as the water will evaporate and there is no water pressure to force it in until its warm.
Its leaking on the plastic intake pipe at the top of the engine. I assume the outlet is the pipe at the bottom of the rad? Thats good news about the overflow.
It doesnt have any issues statrting when warm, it starts perfectly. Only reason i can say this is because i have been driving it till it gets to its warm temp(middle of gauge), switiching it off and looking for leaks and then switching it on again.
The leak is tiny, just small bubbles. I am unsure wether to run it for 30 mins and to see what happens.(worries me a little bit) could be a case of corrosion to the top pipe. There is a small amount there but i would have thought that it would still seal.
Thanks
