Post by: Madden on August 13, 2005, 04:57:08 PM
need a bit of advice

My car is hunting but not on idle if you give it a little throttle and hold it at about 2000rpm the revs go up and down by 500rpm and the exhust note changes.   Any ideas?

Cheers jamie

no not at all mate no electrical load.   The exhust note sounds like its shooting a flame you know the noise as you lift of after giving it some down the motorway and give it atiny bit of throttle.

What mods are you running? :wiggle

The only mods im runing is a blizt cat back system still have orginal down pipe and cat but its slightly blowing before the cat at the joint. Standard air box i think the ecu has been played with as there is no speed limit or REV limit scary and it has a ks rom sticker on the front of it.  I have removed the double throttle since then the car has been playing up.

I am sure one or more of the tuners will post but i would advise that you give one of the supporting tuners above a ring. I had a problem with my fd early in my modding with hunting it turned out that it was down to after market ecu,not the Apexi i now have fitted, that was causing turbo spike to 1.1 bar and it damaged the side seals. Be careful and get some expert advice. HTH. :wave

Have just had the engine re-built by Geff @ RE:WORX. The standard port has not been touched as would seem by calling the engine street ported, as in enlargement, but the ports had been polished very nice job too. Geff has removed all the Hurley bits on my instruction. We will see what power we can make on the 27th Sept at RE:WORX Portsmouth on the Dyno. If you are free pop down. If not I will be at SantaPod on the 3rd Sept for the test and tune day where I will be going after the 1/4 mile British Record for Stock Twins. Sdminus -- holds it at the moment and he is going to try and join me so we can go head to head and push the envelope. :wave

Does it drive ok? does it smoke much/a lot?

no fine mate boosts up fine aswell.   The only prob with driving is when you are in first gear at light throttle just crawling as you lift of the car seems to have massive engine breaking and then you apply the throttle again the car jerks foward.  never done that before.   Its done this since  i removed the double throttle.   Also i had to readlust the idle as well it was well high after romoving it.

Try another TB quick, should help nail down where the problem (leak?) is?
Title: engine is hunting
Post by: Madden on August 14, 2005, 06:01:19 PM
just fixed the exhust leak that has help alot but is still hunting when you hold the revs still.    I doesnt do it striaght away it takes a while to make it do it all the way thought the rev band but not at idle.  Doesnt happen when driving either.  Checked for air leak by spraying wd40 around all the gaskets and pipes no rev change.  very strange.

I have check the throttle bodie gasket and it is nakered has been broken before but not leaking.   One of the one way check valves is nakered as well.

So i will try that and at the same time do the rats nest with nice new hoses.

Any other ideas ?

Cheers for all your help

Do you mean it started playing up after you removed the Secondry Throttles?

Did your Idle go higher (when it was warm) after you removed them?
Title: engine is hunting
Post by: Madden on August 15, 2005, 11:23:55 AM
yea it hapened after removing double throttle and the idle went higher from warm.  I have adjusted it down again but it hardly has any more adjust ment in it.  The ass screw is all the way in and the tas screw is nearly all way out.

Post by: Grizzly on August 15, 2005, 06:11:38 PM
Check for air leaks mate. Have you blocked all the Air pipes etc off?

The revs should\'nt realy go up too much on idle when warm. They usaly drop when cold so you have to rase the Rpm so it don\'t stall all the time.

So if the revs go up when its warm it means there is more air getting in somwhere.

Post by: Madden on August 15, 2005, 06:24:30 PM
yea i have checked all the lines and everything is alright i have got it idling at 850rpm  and it sits there fine now.  its just that hunting when i hold the revs at around 3000rpm but not under driving conditons

Check tps switch is still in range. How did you adjust the idle????If you use screw on front of throttle body near throttle cable you can put tps switch out of range slightly which will cause it to hunt.Depending on how it is adjusted will cause it to hunt either at idle or up the rev range like you have described. Its a real arse to get it to stabilise again.
Do you have Power FC???????????
Title: engine is hunting
Post by: Madden on August 16, 2005, 06:29:08 AM
now i havent tried that will check that today.  How do you check the range mate or should i just use the manual? no power fc just some **** ecu that has been chiped to remove the speed and rev limiter.   Where is the stock rev limiter kick in
Title: engine is hunting
Post by: Madden on August 16, 2005, 06:11:09 PM
Just check out the tps and it was out slightly so adjusted it to within its range and its still happening.

Very confused now

Anymore ideas?

you scare me lol No the engine is runing fine at idle not a prob reving or driving spot on .   It is really wierd it doesnt do it striaght away either you have to hold it there for about 3mins before it starts hunting.   I thought i heard the air con keep cuting in as well not sure.  Can the air con clutch become activated even its all turned off?
Title: engine is hunting

Duno, Maybe its somthing as simple as its set up a bit too rich at 2000rpm so when its not got load on it your seeing overfueling symptoms?

Have you ever had it rollered?
Title: engine is hunting
Post by: Madden on August 16, 2005, 07:43:20 PM
No mate only picked it up 2 weeks ago.   just started playing around with it got a few thing to do first on it and then im on the rollers.

I have a few bits coming from mazda this week so i will do that and then see what happens.   Got a couple of check vavles coming and some manifold gaskets aswell hopefully that will sort it out

Cheers for all you help guys .  One of the best forums i have ever been on
Any more ideas welcome

Try replacing the tps switch?????????One you know is good, from a mates car maybe to save you buying a brand new one straight away.Worth a try,tps switches are a common problem.

Post by: Carl on August 17, 2005, 08:14:12 AM
The thing that is cutting in and out at around 3000 rpm will be the air pump.It siwtches off around that rpm and above. As soon as you go above a reasonable idle speed with the accelerator pedal it should cut in too.
If you get a mate to watch it you will see that is the case.
Take the wire off from the back off the air pump and see what happens.

Carl

Check the airpump while idling(the centre should be spinning), I have had one that was cutting in and out just before it siezed!, this would cause hunting.

it is making alot of noise liking grinding.    Can i just remove it and get a different belt.  Still runing the cat though.   If i unplug it will it mess up the ecu and put it in limp mode or anything or can i just leave it upluged?>

Cheers Jamie

Post by: JayDee on August 17, 2005, 03:23:03 PM
You can unplug it, but you may have to adjust the idle up a bit using the screw on the throttle body. It is suppose to kill the cat if you do not have the pump connected, I do not see why as other cars run without a pump and it turns off at 3K anyway.

hello have disconected  the air pump and now the car is hunting on idle.  The clutch on the aor pump is shaged as it still catchs tiny bit even with its unpluged?
Title: engine is hunting
Post by: Carl on August 18, 2005, 08:02:49 AM
Drop your idle now,the ecu is trying to settle it,but the screw will be too high,so they are both fighting each other.
If you are decatting then take the airpump off and run a shorter belt.
Don\'t forget that if you run no cat you may need an ecu upgrade.
