Title: low mpg , my solution
Post by: whinger on August 12, 2005, 05:36:13 PM
as i work away all week i find it hard to work on my car to finish it off , and it would cost me somewhere around £150 return in fuel to take the car with me.

i was looking into buying a trailer or towing dolly , but they take up too much room.

and then i found this, just hook it up to your (broke down car ) and tow it like a trailer.

then it just stores in the boot till you need it.

regards

chris

i have one of these,  its excellent, much better than a trailer.  I towed my kit car from Essex to Wales an brought my Rx 7 back using an old merc 190 e.  No problems at all.

Good value for money as well.  My mate will have it in his boot whenever i take the rx to Santa Pod,  it means not waiting for the AA when the inevitable happens.

how far do Mazda recommend you tow an rx7 before it can cause damage ? don\'t most cars have a limit ? is this just playing it safe or is there a real risk ?

We were going to get one of these between us for the rally cars but thought better of it as the car has to be rolling to use it, just use RAC cover instead now :D

On a manual car there\'s not a problem Mike. Its auto cars where you can have problems because they need the flywheel spinning for there oil pumps. What happens is the prop drives the rear end of the drivetrain in the box but with no oil pumps running it overheats and kills the box hence the limit of 10miles at 20mph etc. A manual box has no pumps as its splash cooled/lubricated by the motion of the layshaft spinning so no problems when towing.

I thought in the hand book it says not to tow any models of the FD and that they have to be on a flat bed or a 4 wheel dollie?

I was going to get one of those things. They are good BUT, as the FD has an oil pump system for the gear box. if the engine aint running it\'s not pumping oil around the box, I heard nightmear stories about stuffed gearboxes due to such things!!!! :spank

I always thought it was because of the lsd that you couldn\'t use dollies. I remember having the same problem with xr4x4\'s years ago.

I certainly wouldnt use one with a mechanical lsd, dont know how a stock lsd would cope with it.
