Hi, Ive just bought an 93 RX7 Type r and im about to do a bit of a service on it.Im still a bit confused as to which oil to use..Is Castrol Magnatec ok or would i be better off with just Castrol GTX..??
Any help would be great..! :wave
I\'ve been told that SILKOLENE XTR 10W-40 is best, talk to OPIE oils, banner at the top,. they will point you in the right direction.
use only mineral oil, i use castrol 10-40W
I thought I\'d read somewhere before that Magnatec is a big "no no".
I use 10W-40 mineral oil (Castrol I think). Worth dropping an e-mail to Opie Oils to see what he\'d recommend.
Cheers
Jon
you wont get better than a fully synthetic oil, especially a double ester.
I have several customers using Royal Purple 10w40, which is just that.
I\'ve read somewhere before that Royal Purple is the best oil to use... think that\'s what Pip uses (WGT Auto\'s).
I suppose I should treat my car to a bottle instead of poisoning her with Halfords stuff.
There are several well informed guys now using Royal Purple just some.
Carl Hayward in his 4 rotor
Tim in his 1st gen
Dave Nixon in his RX3 race car
and you can also ask Pip about it.
Is Halfords stuff a no no then?
I just bought some of their own Part Synthetic 10w40 as thats what they recommended for \'92> Gen3s in store. Havent used any of it yet. Should i be taking it back and geting some better stuff or will this be ok just to keep it topped up?
Adam
Adam,
For safety and peace of mind, exchange that for straight mineral.

I don\'t want to sound offensive to Halfords employee\'s, but if the experts on here say use Royal Purple or at least full mineral then I\'d say go for that over Halfords recommendations.

So is "castrol GTX magnatec 10w - 40 synthetic" wrong ???
Think you will find its not a true synthetic

Is it wrong though ?
if its just hydrocracked rather than an ester according to oil mans oil description it will be fine.
Ok, i\'ve been on the Rotary Art web site looking at the Royal Purple oils. I\'m i missing something here, cause they all seem to be Synthetic and your recommeding Mineral!?!? :xconfused
Adam
I\'m no expert, but this is my take on the issue.
I think there\'s something about synthetic oils whereby they don\'t burn well (rotary engines burn a bit of oil in the rotor chambers) and these synthetic oils leave deposits inside the rotor chamber - which is what you don\'t want. And that\'s why mineral oil is the preferred, since it burns up in the chamber and doesn\'t leave much, or any, deposits.
However, some synthetic oils burn without leaving deposits, and I think Royal Purple is one of them.
Gary should be along to give you a better explanation.

Ok, cheers Tony. Your not a bad guy after all :p

Conventional Fully Synthetic oil is not designed to lubricate a combustion chamber, causing a build up of carbon. Royal Purple is among a minority that have designed their oils to be burnt cleanly.
John
The fact is you wont get better engine protection than using a fully synthetic oil, Unfortunately like most things there are several manufacturers and some not as good as others.
Royal Purple has been designed with double esters which is the ultimate protection and burns very cleanly, where as others will leave a residing in the engine, using semi syn will get round the residure but wont provide best engine protection.
Double ester will also keep all the rubber rings nice and supple, where as most other oils will eventually make them brittle and perrish.
Using the recommended mineral oil will not stop your rings going brittle, it burns clean thats all,
There are some tech posts in oilmans section, if you want to get boogled by science, very interesting and basically says what Ive just said. If your going to use a fully syn oil make such its double ester.
