Title: Brakes are giving me a head ache
Post by: scramp on August 07, 2005, 11:56:01 PM
Hi,

Just had new front discs and pads fitted (about 90 miles ago) to my cab, and omg the screaching, it sounds like a bus. if i brake hard it doesnt do it, but in normal driving around town with lots of stoping at lights and stuff, it screaches like you wouldnt believe, i\'ve never had so many people look in my direction b4, and the kids start to cry cos of the noise lol.

Another thing is when i am reversing into a space and braking is sounds like the pads grip but then there is slight movement as tho the pads are moving a fraction in the callipers (if that makes sense)

Before i call the garage can anyone tell me what could be wrong? not that i dont trust them but its always better to be in the know b4 you call :)

Did you put the pad shims back in? also what pads are you using? if they are Track pads they will Screach when cold (Track pads need to be kept in there Temp sweet spot)

It sounds like you need to replace the Shims and pins. The Pads may have just glazed over. How do you drive the car? (like driving Miss daisy or Mad Max)

they are just stock replacment pads and discs, sorry to say i have no idea what a shim or pin does, but the garage (rotary specialist) should know to put them back in shouldnt they? or is it common for these to fail if they are not replaced with the pads, or are rusted?

Oh and mostly a miss daisy, london traffic doesnt allow my max side to show through very much. only really open her up when i get onto the motorway.

put some copper grease on the back of the pads problem should be solved! btw DONT get ANY on the front of the pad or the disk for the obvious reason

make sure every thing is on nice and tight!

how can putting copper grease on the back stop the screaching? i would have thought i was caused by the contact between the front of the pad and the disk? or am i missing something? :s

They sound like there Just glazed over, You need to abuse your car a little more ;)

Copper Grease is just a temp measure to stop the pads rattling its common in the Garage world so it don\'t rattel on you for a week or so (Happy Customer stuff ;)). When fitting pads you are suposed to clean the sliders etc so there is no dust build up and make sure the pads don\'t bind or stick before you refit the Caliper. The Shims or Anti Squeel Shims are made from Mild steel and have a Life span, I have seen many T2\'s without them fitted or they are in a bad condition through rust, The pins are the things that stop the pads from moving about in the caliper (sliding out etc).

I would say if you are new to the Mechanic kind of stuff keep the Brakes as Dry as possable NO Grease or Brake fluid after you have finished clean the Caliper and disk with Brake cleaner (you can get it from any car shop) this gets all the greasy fingure marks or Protective oil of the disk (if fitting new disks).

would applying the brakes hard maybe 8-10 times from 50-0 do the job, bit apresensive about doing it really, just incase something is wrong and the pads pop out. lol

noticed there is a lot of brake dust on my wheels, wouldnt that mean they are not glazed? and it would more likely be the shims?

ok did the hard braking thing 6 times, with no change in the squeal, all that has happened is my wheels have even more brake dust on them, one thing did happen, i was pulled over by the police, i was seen on cctv going up and down the road braking hard.

Told them what i was trying to do, and one of the officers said "they probably didnt bother replacing the shims when they changed your pads, and just put some sort of paste or grease on the back of them"

If that turns out to be the case, i am very disapointed with the garage, i would have expected a better service from them.

Gonna just order some new shims, and pins, and take them to the man under the arches to take them out and re-fit i think.

take it back to em mate, and dont take any crap off them that it will go away cos it wont!

a little copper grease is good it stops the squeek, however make sure they replace the shims. i havent had to change the pads on my rx yet but im pretty sure these should come with the pads? now the juddering could easily be some grease on the pads / oil still on the new disks.

Sometimes things can get overlooked, although with such a vital part of the car not working correctly this could have killed you, make sure they give you something extra for the trouble they have caused you. besides no one likes or wants to be pulled over by the fuzz, hope they didnt book you for anything, cos they could have!

the cops were fine, just asked me not to do it again, they just got a report of suspicious driving.

Just priced up new ones at mazda, comes to 24 for new shims and pins, and the guy under the bridge will fit them for the cost of a few beers so just gonna do that, will cost me less in time and petrol rather than drive back out of london to the garage that fitted them.

Thanks for everyones help :)

Thought i would do an update, picked up the parts from mazda, new shims and pins £24, had them fitted today (will see how many beers that costs on sat lol), no more squeals :) the orig garage didnt bother to put the old shims back in when replacing the pads, just put some grease behind them so it didnt show up for the first few days, nice of them.
