Title: Suspension Strangeness
Post by: gmogle on August 04, 2005, 08:30:36 AM
Hi Guys,

I have aftermarket springs and struts on my 3rd gen RX7. When its next to a standard sized car it looks like its been lowered about 60 mill.

Anyway I borrowed some standard front suspension (thanks to Andrew at Jimmys) to see if I could erradicate another problem I have and fitted one side last night.

Upon taking the shock out and laying it down next to my aftermarket one Imagine my suprise when I find that the whole shock and spring unit is the same size !

So anyway I put the standard shock into my car, put the wheels back on etc and lower it and lower it and lower it........and......its the same height as my struts and springs !

Why would it be the same height as the standard? Its obvious that my spring have more turns in them that the standard so will make it a firmer ride but is there anything else that adjusts the height of the car?

Seating height of the spring on the strut and the sterngth of the spring will have an effect on the height.

Are you sure the springs/suspension height on a \'standard\' car you compared yous too were standard and not higher than normal?  60mm is a hell of a drop for a car to take - stock suspension would give a few cm at most between top of wheel and arch (front) at most...

I dont think the car I compared it too was higher than normal. Its Alexbs and he said his was normal suspension.

Andrew at Jimmys who got my car and prepared it said it was the lowest one he ever seen. Basically there is a gap of less than a half a centimetre between the top of the tyre and the centre of the arch.

I can only just fit a hand (small hand) in the gap. There are rub marks on the arch liner where it has caught and the arch itself is being pulled out by the tyre. We have knocked it back in but it has pulled it out again (this is the main reason for tackling this issue).

Its running on the standard 99 spec wheels which are 16s I believe.
