Title: Boost problems at 4-5k all the way to red line
Post by: D3S on August 04, 2005, 12:04:00 AM
Woohoo i just picked up my FD today and wow what a car, the pics i posted do not do it justice, i know its my car but its one of the nicest FD\'s i have seen in a long time.

Anyway to cut a long story short, i have been having issue on my drive back from southamptom with the 2nd turbo boosting, i dont have a boost gauge to tell what psi its running at, but when i floor it in 2nd its good but when boosting in 3,4,5th its really hesitant, very lumpy at 4.5-5k all the way through. The engine is standard bar the Blitz Nur spec and apexi air filters. i am wondering if this is a vacume hose issue or maybe when it had a boost gauge and its been removed from the previous owner that has caused an issue?!

Many thanks

Gav

more than likely a vacuum hose issue as ytou stated, it might just be a bit \' i\'ve been stuck on a boat for three months\' syndrome...

needs a good blow out... but seems strtange that it is ok in 2nd though... best thing to do is a get a boost gauge... beg borrow or steal..err best not steal it... stick it on the plenum and see... if it is not boosting on the 2nd turbo then it will be a vacuum hose....

might be worth having a looka round the bay and seeing if they are any loose... also what state are they in... are they brittle... ( be careful if they are... they break easily)  it might be worth while getting the vac hose replacement done... where are you based...

Hey, this RX-7 of yours? Its not lowered by any chance, is it? Really really close to the ground? And you weren\'t driving it back about 5:30 ish last night were you?

Actually - i think i\'ve heard this issue. I\'ll just check it up...i might be wrong though, but i\'ll see.

Nope - not the problem i was thinking of! Sorry - don\'t know in that case. Check this doc out - might help in diagnosing the problem: http://www.autosportracetech.com/RX-7/TurboTroubleshooting.htm

If it\'s running lumpy in 3rd and above it\'s well worth getting it checked out properly.

It may be a boost issue (could be overboosting and then fuel-cutting ro something equally nasty) but it could also be weak spark/crappy plugs as the load placed on the engine isn\'t really significant until you\'re in the higher gears - you\'ll hit problems in higher gears that aren\'t there in 1st and 2nd.

If it\'s just come off the boat it\'s also possible that the fuel in it\'s well past it\'s best and you\'re getting bad detonation or the internals just need time to get un-gunked.

Worth getting it checked out properly to be safe and not sorry!

Iain\'s certainly right with problems occurring more in higher gears: I\'ve got a fuel cut issue in fifth, but no other gear, when on high load acceleration.

Let me know how you get on with this- I think I\'ve got something similar. In second gear I get good boost all the way to the buzzer :) In third it seems to hesitate almost as if it\'s not got full boost, sometimes easing off the throttle and then reapplying it helps for 1000rpm, then it seems to bog down again.  I only noticed it recently; haven\'t had the car long so haven\'t had the opportunity to thrash it. I was going to get a boost gauge anyway, and also get a specialist to give the car a once over while it\'s still under warranty.

Well 1st and 2nd boosts fine, just when i get into 3rd,4th, 5th it hesitates, flutters is the best way to describes it. The battery was flat when she came off the boat so the ECU could of been reset. The symptoms seem like a vacum problem, but i am going to get a complete service plug, oil change etc etc, could it be where the boost gauge was taken off and they never plugged the hole back up where it was?!

Cheers

You never answered whether it was you on the motorway round 5:30ish yesterday!

Anyway, boost gauge is a definate must: it can be used to confirm whether you are having problems.

Its easy to identify whether the boost gauge hole was never plugged up, but i doubt it is that. Firstly, you\'d hear the whistling of pressurized air coming from the engine. The silver upper intake manifold, right at the top of the engine, has a connection available for the boost gauge. This \'nozzle\' is located on the left hand side if you\'re looking at the engine from the front of the car. It\'s exactly halfway between the back of the manifold and the front of it, and quite near the base. It should have a bit of rubber pipe that comes off it and is blocked off. If you just see the nozzle with no hose, it is leaking air - but i doubt that\'s the problem.

Ah - you answered as i wrote!

Saw you just coming onto the M27 (Slow moving traffic). And then you went past following by a Honda Integra Type R (Presumably trying to race you - would stand no chance if you\'re 7 is working properly)

Plug and oil change should be your 1st step.  See what it\'s doing after that.

What ECU is it running?

Gotta agree there really. Get the basic service sorted first. HT leads wouldn\'t be a bad idea either - I had a bad misfire that was cured with replacement leads.

Nick, Ahh yes that was me :D the teg was my mate he took me down to pick up the low riding biatch lol

Well the location where you said the boost gauge went ha s a red pipe coming out into the cabin somewhere.

I think the only thing for her is to have a full service and whack on a boost gauge to see what boost im getting, should be 0.7 bar is that correct?!

As for the ECU thats standard.

Cheers

You should follow the red hose into the cabin and find out what\'s on the end of it.

Boost should be 0.7 bar, yes, that\'s right.

She certainly is a low riding biatch! I couldn\'t believe how low it was! How many inches between the floor and the bottom of the car? 2!?

I will do that tonight when i get in to see where its going.

As for how low it is to the ground i am not to sure, but its very low i have to be so careful when going over stones lol, i will find out for you when she goes in on Saturday.
