Title: Newbie Engine Questions
Post by: ReX 7 on August 03, 2005, 08:33:43 PM
Hi everybody, I\'ll hopefully have an FD on my driveway soon and i was wandering what would be the best first few mods to a stock car ? Engine only really as i can\'t stand all the max power crap. And also what can be done to a wankel engine internally ? I understand the physics behind otto tuning but can\'t see any other way of modifying a wankel apart from porting and flowing the ports ?

BTW hello :D

It would depend where you want to go with the car and what you are after from it.

I\'d make sure it\'s reliable first - there\'s a ton of mods you can do to make sure it\'s stays running. It\'ll also give you time to learn about the car. It can be a full time job getting them to run correctly in the first place.

Good advice mate.

When I first had my car Gary (gooding) would not let me tune it untill he was happy it was running as it should.
It took some time to iron out the probs but was well worth it. The end product still blows me away every time i drive it.

A cheap and good reliabilty mod is to replace the old plastic air seperator tank (AST) with a new aluminum AST. Cost is approx £90-100.

The stock plastic one is known for splitting and dumping all your coolant, thus you have no cooland and thats not good for obvious reasons.

Cool will do, the only rex i\'ve seen round our way is a nice looking red one that doesn\'t seem to hang around :D, whats your car look like ?

I don\'t want to make a name for myself really (can\'t afford to) but it would be nice to have a clean stdish looking rex with a reliable and fun engine, power wise i would say 300 bhp would keep me happy and keep the saxo\'s and other wannabes at bay.

How do i go about making it reliable then ? It will be well looked after and i\'ll hopefully make sure i buy a good one.

The red one may not be rotary powered.

You know where Brittanic Assurance is - just off Jct3 M42 and left at Becketts Island
I\'ll be there from around 7 - not a lot of Jap performance just loads of new and old cars.

I\'ll post a link to the last meeting

not to sound out of line - drive it for 6 months and then mod it

get used to the handling of the car first and how it acts - when you think you can handle the power - then begin the modding process

just my £0.02 worth

Agree with you 110% mate, i\'ve never driven a RWD car yet, let alone a RWD performance car so trust me i\'ll be carefull and get used to the handling, i know what you must think, but i\'m not a youngster thats gonna be tearing up the neighbourhood, i\'m an enthusiast and usually treat my car better than the mrs (don\'t tell her) :D, but i\'ll truely respect its handling capabilities trust me. Thanks for the concern though.

i drive an FC so cant really tell you the mods , but usually something along the line of

1 - Apexi ECU
1a - Hard Pipe Kit - stops things breaking
1b - Alloy AST ( dont ask - i read it on here somewhere )
1c - ooohhhhh induction kit
2 - Full Decat
3 - Boost Controller

that should see you up to 300 BHP

the just go mad with

1 - Single Turbo
2 - Front Mount Intercooler
3 - Bigger Injectors

how deep are your pockets at the end of the day

Another question if you don\'t mind... Is it just the replaceable parts of the engine ie rotor tips, seals etc that wear, or can you get wear on higher mile engines on the main engine parts ? ergo would it be better to get a lower mile car even if i was to rebuild the engine anyway ?

Thankyou for any response.

Just to let you know I won\'t be taking my car to the meet tonight, so if you were coming for a look - it won\'t be there.

I don\'t really think there is such a thing called reliability mods apart from water injection. The are plenty of other mods you can do but don\'t make the car anymore reliable.

You aint wrong , mine was my first rear wheel drive , you\'ll think you can handle it untill you lose the back end while driving in a straight line  :eek then you\'ll really learn to respect the power

the road was dry , however there was a little stream of water running across it and I didn\'t see it untill it was too late , luckily I didn\'t do any major damage just buckled a wheel when I hit the kurb

It took me a while to gain my confidence again in the wet , but I\'m glad it happened before I got used to really throwing the car around , it could have been a lot worse

It usually takes a near miss like this to teach respect for the rex in the wet, some of us get away with nothing more than a red face, some lose their P&J :(  I must admit though - I drive like a wuss in the wet even though I\'ve had the car for over 2 years now!

I vary. I drive pretty confident in the wet until I push it too far, then something happens to **** me up so I drive like a wuss until I get over confident.

I\'m stuck in this never ending vicious loop.

Top bloke knows his stuff and sorted my car out a treat, well worth the 200 mile round trip for me and my motor. Definately recommended. He\'s going to be moving soon though if everything goes according to his plans.
