Hi :)
I am going to be buying a rx7 in the next 2 weeks, jap type r if I can find a nice one for my £6.5k max budget. I dont know anything about rotary engines, but have heard that they need rebuilding after about 50k miles? Is this for all engines for any type of usage, or can they last longer? My main concern is buying one that has not been rebuilt recently, and it only lasting 5k miles then being stuck with a £2k plus rebuild cost.
And opinions on the longevity of the engines would be greatly appreciated.

id suggest speaking to some of the importers (a few on here) they will be able to source a good one for your budget im sure. (unless you want uk)

As for the rebuild etc. I dont actually own one but have researched aboout them for months, id suggest unless youget it off a reputable importer taking it straight to a rotary specialist to have it checked out.

Buy one with a rebuild unless it has very low milage .  And get it checked out before hand, by a specilist.
At least you know then it is all ok and runs right .
As for rebuild time ... it all depends whats done to it . some go at 40k .. some at 70k that i have heard off .

Or buy a blown one cheap and get it rebuilt straight away....if you can find one.

Hi and welcome mate.

all good advice so far...

Choose carefully, dont buy the first one you fall in love with as it could end up costing you a packet! If you can get one with a recent rebuild that still has some warranty thats transferrable on it then even better, even if doesnt look fantastic, its cheaper to mod for looks than it is for engine rebuilds, well just... but it is  :D i should know, i bought the first one i fell in love with, that had its pro\'s too as i have now rebuilt it and tarted it up exactly to my my liking, but i now have no money  :rolleyes:  :rollin

Definately agree with whats been said already, take your time to buy the right one. Best bets are as the guys say either one thats been recently rebuilt by one of the specialists (and still has some warranty) or get one thats going to need a rebuild soon and get it rebuilt by a specialist (if you do this though try to find out what its going to need there are rebuilds and then there are rebuilds - depending on what needs done the cost can vary £2k to more than £4k).

The length of life an engine has depends on how it has been treated, if its warmed up and cooled down correctly and driven mostly on the motorway it can last 70k +, if its abused probably much much less.

you could always buy one and when it blows up put a v8 in it then have trouble free driving and 30 mpg !,they will do 200,000 before rebuild !!!!

Going to call about a couple tomorrow, one from a dealer with a rebuilt engine, but not sure if it is a type r, just says import twin turbo. Also seen this one on autotrader:

Doesnt mention rebuilt engine, so may check it out and if it looks good get it checked out by a garage that knows rotaries

If its got lots of engine mods check also that it has a programmable ecu such as Apexi power fc as the standard ecu can\'t cope and doesn\'t fuel the engine correctly causing detonnation and bringing forward rebuild time.
