Title: egr valve
Post by: Madden on July 31, 2005, 05:06:08 PM
hello

Took the upper inlet manifold of today and i was wondering if some fds dont have the egr valve.  there is no soloniod and all the pipes have been removed.

Can anyone help

I\'m sure it was only the US spec cars that had EGR, although the UK ones might have it aswell?

i have the vacume diagram and have followed all the pipes .  The rack still has the metal pipes on it though.   And while i was doing it i broke an nipple on the double throttle soloniod just blocked the one coming from the manifold. Will it be alright without it?

So has the double throttle been disabled?

Yes but i have left the butterflys in it.  And only because i snapped the nipple on the solonoid.   It shouldn\'t matter should it as they still open up with the throttle.?

Yeah, it should be fine....just be carefull not to give her too much stick when she\'s cold. Might be worth removing the butterfly completely if you\'re not planning on replacing the broken solenoid.

So what does it actually do ?  Do they stay shut when the water temp is cold and then when it warms up they open with the normal throttle

Yeah, they close partially when the car\'s cold preventing you from giving it too much boost before the car\'s fully warmed up. You might as well eliminate the coolant supply to the throttle body as well, since the thermal pellet in the throttle body is essentially redundant now.

Isn\'t the thermal pellet for the warm up idle setting, so not part of the double throttle system?

I\'m not sure? Does the thermal pellet not move the double throttle at all? Or is it just the throttle body butterflies?

Well, I\'ve just removed the thermal pellet on my car - it acted on a cam which moved the throttle butterflies.

I\'d need to check the factory manual, but I\'m pretty sure the double throttle is activated by solenoid when the engine reaches a certain temperature.

Ah ok, I got you. Have you eliminated the coolant supply to the throttle body?

Yes. I control the idle with the screw on the front of the UIM, rather than the one on the firewall side. I removed the wax rod/pellet part as well.

Oddly enough, even with a street port, I get a rock-steady idle when the car is warmed up.

Great stuff. I was thinking about giving it a go, I never really liked the idea of having hot coolant flowing through the throttle body. Having said that, as soon as the manifold gets heat soaked, the throttle body\'ll probably end up hotter than the coolant anyway. Have you seen those insulating UIM and LIM gaskets on US ebay? I wonder how effective they\'d be in reducing conduction from the engine core into the inlet manifold?

I have checked and the doulbe throttle is controlled by and soloniod with vacume when the car get up to temp it shuts the solonid so that no vacume gets to the control actuator thus keeping it shut

Surely you mean "keeps the double throttle open when the car gets to operating temperature"?

yes thats the one lol

But the two butterflys  open with the throttle all the way hot or cold.   Is the double throttle just an advanced warm up system?

The double throttle butterflys stay permanently shut (thus limiting power) if the DT solenoid is broken.  Try the car as it is now, you will only get about 5 psi!!!

The DT is not controlled by the throttle pedal.

Cheers

just tested and getting around 0.8 bar.   So sould i tie the DT actuator back wih some thing?  Still a bit confused here.   I took my inlet elbow off and when i open the throttle all 3 buterflys open

also the car idles at around 850 but when you rev  it goes up to 1500 rpm and then comes back down to 850 rpm after about 20 secs.  is this normal?   I just comp tested the engine and i got 7 bar on all 3 on both rotors.  Well pleased.

Yep, I think you\'re getting confused here. I\'d familiarise yourself with the setup by checking the factory manual.

The double throttle is behind the throttle body assembly, on the UIM itself. You can ensure that it is always open by disconnecting the vacuum line. Remember to seal off the vacuum line in some way.
