Mike - saw these no doubt you have already found them but thought may be of interest.

surely they didn\'t rally 1st gens with the original steering set up?? You\'d never get it round the corners, & it would wobble all the way down the straight bits!! :rollin
yes they did. They also race them with the original steering boxes in Aus and they work fine as does the steering box in the multiple championship winning car driven by Stacey Vickers here in the UK.
Excellent photos, thanks.
I \'spose that depends on your definition of \'fine\'. Probably ok in a vintage rally ;)
I\'m having a rack fitted to mine & i cant wait!
vintage rally LoL try group B ;)
yes, I will probably purchase a kit from Centreline in Aus once they get it sorted ... either that or copy it :D
ooo - not heard about that. Got any info?
I\'m having someone look into fitting a ford jobbie.
Do you mean whiteline?
We ran our 1st gen at a sprint two weeks ago. Normal steering, no problems.
We were good for 3rd in class with rusty driver. But yes we will be looking at a rack set up in the future due to lock to lock ratios and parts sourcing etc. Plus it is more than likley lighter.
Mike the parts are on the way. Have been in Dover for best part of a week.
Those Gp B pics nearly bought a tear to the eye. There is a b spec gravel car in NZ and I saw it in the 80s and then it dissapeared. I last heard it had undergone a full restoration and is now being used in anger again
top job on the parts, thanks.
No Don, I mean Centreline. Have a look on Ausrotary.
Emailed them about the rack kit but got no reply.
Not sure what the problem is with RX steering. If you have play just adjust it out of the steering box - it takes 2 minutes. I\'ve only ever seen steering racks on really high spec race rotaries. ;)
The problem with 1st gen steering is this: Rubbish lock, wanders on the straight, low geared, unreponsive & is SO HEAVY it feels like you are driving a WW2 20ton lorry, not a 1200kilo sports car!
Bunch of £££ saving cheapskate vintage design ars*e!
Spoils an otherwise nice to drive pretty little car.
the steering lock is limited by the rx7\'s wide tyres and small arches. fitting a rack won\'t help with that.
I must admit a rack would feel nicer but i doubt it would make much of a difference to times on a rally stage or track + the advantage with a steering box is they are MUCH stronger than a steering rack.
I\'ll still convert mine if I get half a chance.
Likewise my good man!

To stop the wandering increase the castor - common problem on old RX\'s. Decreasing the castor will make the steering less heavy. You need to try and find a balance somewhere there unfortantely. Lock and low gearing are less easily fixed. You could maybe increase the lock with longer rod ends? (don\'t know the legality of this tho). Good luck with whatever you try though. :cheers
i\'ve never had a problem with my steering,i\'ve always found it to be very light, and you get a better feel of the road, unlike with power steering(yuck).my car is perfectly stable at 130+mph,and i bet Tim will tell you the same.
I\'ve got to say same with mine - maybe I\'m just really used to it, but absolutely no wandering slow or at speed, corners fabulously (at any speed!) and never feels heavy. So much nose on it, that once you\'ve got momentum, absolutely no problem!
Are we driving the same cars?? Do you drive anything else to compare it to? My other car has power steering so I really notice getting into the RX.

Have you ever competed Road Rally in your RX? ive just bought an 84RX for that reason. just wondering how they cope?
Cheers
Ali
they aren\'t allowed on road rallies :( have a read of the blue book
