Title: Which header?
Post by: djguru on August 04, 2003, 12:33:49 PM
Has anyone experience of purchasing headers (extractors/downpipes whatever) for the 1st Gen 12a NA?  I know MikeLMR had a thread a while back but I\'m not sure how that story ended up.
Anyway. the existing header (definately not OEM but of unknown origin) required patching the other day as it blew a hole the size of a 50p piece - it\'s surely on its way out.  I need something that is free flowing (obviously!), good quality and won\'t break the bank...too much.
Who\'s had experience good or bad?

Cheers

Dave

Hi mate!

I would go for a Racing Beat style headers/extractors, they are properly tuned and made for the various model rotaries made.  But drop MikeLMR a PM and see what he ended up doing.

Check out...

http://www.racingbeat.com/

I think there are a couple of companies in the UK that sell their gear.

The Racing Beat stuff is meant to be good , but no one would tell me for sure if it would fit on a RHD car.

I\'m currently sticking with the standard system till Carl can get round to making an exhaust system for the 1st gen (working on the 3rd gen at the moment)

Thanks guys. Yeah, I\'d previously checked out the RB site and was impressed with their gear (as almost everyone the States seems to be).  I just guessed their stuff must fit on RHD as they export to UK, Aus and elsewhere.
I thought maybe that someone had actually fitted or seen something (not necessarily RB) good quality or otherwise - I have to phone UK suppliers from here and get stuff posted to NI so I\'m pretty much relying on the experience of others!
Of course if I could afford the shipping and taxes from the US I\'d go straight to RB (geez, even the Victoria British stuff can turn out costly once everyone\'s taken their cut...)

shipping is the killer ... I have seen others talking about ways of bypassing certain "problems" when importing parts but I have no idea how they do it.

There\'s a lot of stuff RB do that I\'d like but taxes make it so expensive it cheaper to have custom made jobbie by an expert.

(no idea how much Tube torque would charge for just a manifold but his work is fantastic + the plans for a good flowing manifold are relatively easy (keep the primary pipes small\'ish and don\'t let them turn before at least 3" after leaving the block.) + I have seen some very interesting stuff about tapering the primary pipes from the shape of the port to round over about 2" to help prevent turbulance after the port. (trouble is you really need to remove the stock exhaust sleeves and re-shape new ones to see the full benafit and it looses some of the natural silencing due to the turbulance (possibly why Mazda designed it that way ??)

Mike (still open minded as to what to do with my exhaust but hoping that Carl will come to the rescue ;)  )

Regards,
               Mike

Carl, let us know when you\'re up and running for the 1st gen. Maybe the patch on the existing header will hold out for a while...  :)
