R.I.P.

crash happened a week last sunday but i was waiting with fingers crossed that they would repair it before i told anybody. but i received the phone call today and it\'s a cat b write off :( car was mint with 25k miles! what\'s worse is i had only just fitted the avs 5 limited edition wheels a week before and hadn\'t notified insurance about them because i was waiting until i had fitted new exhaust too and do them both in one phone call.
i also enquired about possibility of buying the car back as from what i could tell the damage was mainly cosmetic and to the chassis at the back. i would have thought the engine/interior/front&side panels would have been recoverable, but they say i\'d need a breakers license to buy it back so that\'s a no-go.

i hope to get another rex, but sense tells me that even if i could afford another rex now and would still have the insurance for another 8 months, after that i would have no chance of getting insurance renewed. i will be 21 by then but will have zero no-claims, 5 points and a big accident under my belt so i think it will be impossible.

Sorry to hear that mate.......    :(
The main thing is that you are ok.
I\'d say just jump into another rex asap and enjoy the 8 months, then have a slow car after that(just think all the insurance and petrol you could be saving).
Who knows, after couple of years, you might come back and get an even better one.  They are getting cheaper and cheaper with ever growing import companies.....
Good luck with everything.   :wave

Can you say to the insurance company that you won\'t claim - or is it too late for that now?

I\'d try and get the car back to either repair or sell the bits - you\'d make quite a bit I imagine.

Sorry to hear that Matey,
Agree with Scott that it was a shame we never had the chance to meet up.
What happened if you dont mind me asking?
You could have a word with Andrew at Jimmys, he may be able to get it back for you. Did it happen in Norfolk or Barnsley?

Gutted for you. I had my car written off (uk sunny gti-r) a three months ago. You may get lucky and they may forget to pick the car up. My sunny is still on my drive way three months on. Bit annoying because I need it out the way to get my new FD in the garage.

I was gutted when it happened, especially I had put loads of money into it weeks before getting ready to sell it, for some idiot trying to race an evo smashing into me. I\'m sure all will work out. Just try to look at the positives. If you can\'t afford to insure another FD, just enjoy the cheap running and low depreciation of a runaround. Give you chance to come back bigger and better in a year or so.

hope you get a new one soon

bets of luck...

Do you know where the car is going to be taken to? If you can do that then you may be able to come to an arrangement with the yard owner.  Many years ago my dad crashed his merc on the M25 bridge. It was a right off, but while the abulance was seeing to all those involved in the pile up, a truck took them all to the local breakers yard!  However, a quick phone call the next day insured that all the toys could be removed FOC and collected.  So its well worth letting the yard know its YOUR car.

Gutted for you mate, similar situation to yours last year with a CatB write off. They wouldn\'t let me buy the salvage back although they could tell me where it was going. I didn\'t pursue it.

I managed to get the stereo and speakers out but had to leave everythign else. Was gutted as had really bits on it that could have been used on my new one.

Jump back in the saddle if you can bear it and make use of the rest of your policy, my accident did push premiums up a bit this year but still got it cheaper than I did last year by £900!

If you don\'t mind talking about it how did your accident happen?

Good luck mate,

regards

Gareth

Sorry to hear that ..... :(
My pulsar was written off and i would not let them take it away from the house. (as it did have some mods they didnt know about )
But it is still your car ... and i bought it back off them .... had to send them the V5 .. so i could not repair it and put it back on the road .. but sold it to a salvage company myself and got twice the money they what i bought it back for .
It is worth telling them you are keeping it and how much is the buy back .
Insurance companies are arseholes .... so sock it to them ... and DONT accept anything but top dollar for it , it took me 4 months of arguing to get what i paid for it .... and you should be able to put the standard wheels back on and take yours off if they are not insured (as this was an option by my company)

Until the insurance pays out the car is still your\'s, to do what you want with.
Depends I suppose on how much they are paying out, and what it is worth to you selling the parts on, or using it to put another one on the road.

How many ex gtir owners here?! Mine was written off, I didn\'t claim but was lucky enough to have a garage to store it in and gradually stripped it down selling off the undamaged parts - made about as much as I would\'ve if I\'d sold the car in it\'s former glory, and kept a few universal bits for the fd too.

they haven\'t paid out on the car yet, they are writing to me soon to make an offer. for some reason the car has been taken to middlesborough which i don\'t quite understand. the accident happened in barnsley and the recovery company took it to doncaster. it was my understanding the car would be there once they had made a decision about whether to write off/repair and if write off, i could go to doncaster and take out the parts i needed. however, i phoned them this week and they told me it had been written off, and the car was in middlesborough where it had been sent for breaking! i\'ve phoned the company in middlesborough and they say to get my headunit/mp3 player/cables etc i have to get the insurance company to fax them the list saying i can have them back, and then they\'ll post them to me. seems ridiculous but i don\'t know what else i can do. as for the wheels, the 2 rears are f***ed completely, well beyond refurbing. the fronts just have a couple of marks on from the accident and could probably be refurbed, but if i did ask to swap the 4 originals for the 2 repairable ones i doubt i would make any more money back off them after paying to refurb than what the 4 originals are worth :(

like you guys say i don\'t think they can break it until i\'ve been paid out so i will try and work out a way to buy the car back if possible. the accident only caused damage to the rear of the car so i think the engine/transmission should all be fine. if they are, how much do you reckon they would be worth (both done 25,000miles from new, no rebuild)?

i think it would cost too much for me to repair the car personally. they haven\'t told me why they decided to write it off, but from what i saw the major panel damage was to the large panel that makes up the 2 rear wings, the roof and the door sills. all the damage was to the driver side rear wing but it would need a whole new panel. it would also need a new tailgate hatch with window, and there were small bits of damage to the spoiler and drivers side of the rear bumber which could probably be repaired. as far as mechanical damage it looked to have ripped the rear drivers side wheel away from where it should have been so i imagine there could be great expense in repairing whatever happened under there. i expect if it had just been those things though they would probably repair it, so i\'m guessing there must have been significant damage to the chassis in that same rear drivers side location for it to be a cat b write off.

sounds like a fair bit of structural damage... your prob better off not repairing chassis are a bugger to get straight if they have been bent!

living over that way im suprised they didnt take it to simpsons near York.. far closer and a top bunch of blokes to boot

then again the breaking it yourself might be a decent idea depends how much they offer to buy it for and how much you reckon you will get breaking.

I would think the engine would be worth a wee bit...

Hi

I am sorry to hear about your car.  The main think is you are OK.  As much as we love our cars â€" it is only metal.  You will get another RX â€" we all do.  There are always people with blown engines looking to rebuild / replace the engine.
I know one guy who may be interested in your engine, if you can get hold of it I can get the two of you talking.  You may need to get a compression test …..
Let me know…
You will definitely sell bits here …..

Michaelb

afaik this isn\'t actually 1 panel, it\'s 3 (roof, wings), and the join is covered. I\'ve recently bent the passenger side rear portion of this panel (around the rear light cluster) and was worried about the potential cost of replacing what is basically half the car\'s surface area, but was told it\'s actually multiple panels.

I\'m with Ensign through a broker called Noel Dazely, paying £2650 fully comp. I would have recommended them up until now, so far with the claim they have been far less than helpful. I will update the thread once I have any further news.

To those asking what happened, sorry I forgot to reply sooner. Basically I was on a national limit b road and took a sharp left bend on top of a crest at about 55-60mph. On the exit the front left corner lost grip causing the rear left wheel to slide out and clip the kerb, which spun the car the opposite direction 180 and it went backwards across the other side of the road through a sign post :( luckily no other parties involved though.

well the current news is that they made me an offer a couple of days after i made that last post, which i have declined. i wrote a letter back explaining why the market value was almost double what they offered me, and gave them 2 weeks to come back with a better figure. i\'m confident that i have a good position now though because i know if they fail to produce again then i will first take it to an ombudsman to try and settle, or if that fails just tell them to send the car back to me and instead of claiming i\'ll fix it myself (which i\'m sure i could do at a much smaller loss than what i\'d be taking if i accepted their first offer).

You could buy a cheap import with a blown engine, there are enough about, if your insurance offer you 1/2 of the true value accept it on the condition you get your car back, use the money to buy a rolling shell and then you have another rex  :D

I found elephant was the best place for young drivers and insurance, I\'m 21 I have a modified MR2 Tur bo and my sexy rex and I pay £1500 fully comp for the 2, 0 NCD no accidents but then I dont have any points.

Good luck with it mate!

Unfortunately mate, a Cat B means that it\'s no longer safe to be put back on the road. Cat B effectively means that it can only be broken for parts. You wouldn\'t be able to get the documents back for it, and so it would be useless
