Hi all
I have 96 RB Bathurst jap import with a 1.5 years ago engine re-build by RXMotors. Car had a full service about 10 months ago ( petrol filter was changed aswell )
Today I could only use about 10 to 20% throttle. Every time I put my foot down the engine would choke, splatter and almost limbo. If I used only the above mentioned throttle the car would drive OK. and get up to any speed. This happened before on my old FC and it was just a petrol filter…Also ones or twice on this car. (When I switched off and started the problem would go away).
Towards the end of the day the problem just went away…The car drove fantastic. I was booked at Rotechnicks for Wednesday morning but I cancelled.
I think it could be the injector(s)…
What do you think guys?

Michaelb
Personally i would check the map sensor. S**t loads off smoke ou tthe back ????
yeah check sensor, small black box mounted on rear fire wall, passenger side, to the right of the manifold, should see vacum hose on it.

Thanks for the replay
I was in the car at the time so could not see at the back, but I don\'t think it was smoking..
Excuse ignorance what is map sensor and what shoul I look for re malfunction ? The car is practicaly stock apart from HKS back end, Blits BOV etc.
It does however goe incredibly fast - I dont know if there is other mods - dont see any...mind you I probably would not know what to look 4

Hi
Thanks for the replay
What does the box really look like and is it easy to find ?

smalll black box with small pipes going to it, approx 1"x2" in size in the place I discribed. Think from memory says map sensor on it.

Hi
Many thanks for the effort in sending the photo with the sensor circled. I found it and it does say sensor on it. It looks easy to replace. Do you have an idea how much it costs? What does it do exactly? If the problem comes back I just may change it. It looks easy to do.
Thanks to people like you we all learn more and more about the cars we drive. Thanks again.

PS I hope moderators do not mind me listing my sites.
Just check the pipes on first.
It is unusual for it to be intermittent, but it happened to me coming back from LeMans 4 yrs ago, Rotechniks changed the sensor and all was well, but mine was not intermittent, might want to check before just replacing, could be dirty injectors, they may want cleaning, could be fouled plugs, could be leads need replacing as they break down etc etc....

Hi
Many thanks again. I may just take the car for a oil filter change and have it checked out by Rotechnics or ReWorks

Dude,
I had this problem for a while, your car sounds like it has gone into "limp home mode" and that the ecu has detected a sensor down or something and it only allows you to use about 15% of throttle as it believes that the "problem" may cause damage otherwise.
There wasnt a prob with mine in the end and I think that the ecu just had a moment. You can reset this mode by disconnecting the battery and pressing the brake pedal for about 20 seconds to drain the residual power from the ecu, reconnect the battery and if you have a definate prob then it will obviously come back, if not then HAPPY DAYS!!

Hi
Thanks for that mate. I have not been to Rotechnics yes as initially the problem went away. It has however come back now again.
The problem “pops up†every anther day. It always happens in the first 5min of driving or immediately when I start driving.. Some times when I switch off the car and put it back on it is all fine.
I am going to try your idea now and let you know in the next day or two if it has gone away for good â€" it would be nice…

Hi all
I thought that I should let you know what the problem was with my car. I finally went to Rotechnics and it was the vacuum pack located under plenium chamber.
It was an expensive morning. The job and the parts cost me a massive £652.44
Dave at Rotechnics did however give me a discount as it was going to cost over £700
I also had a small pressure valve changed and small coolant hose (throttle body â€" back plate)
I guess the mods will have to wait..

Michaelb

  !
GOOD GOD
do all FD owners have a money tree aswell ??
That sounds like a lot of money for the work.

Hi
It was a very expensive part - vac unit was £415 plus vat
I am sure a second hand would have been half the price but I wanted the car on the road asap.
Dave at Rotechnics offered to repair the vacum pack ( it would have been a lot cheaper ) but the car would have been in the garage for 2 days and driving on M4 between London and Reading costs a bomb in petrol...
I decided to go for the new part.
I have spent so much on the car already...clutch, breaks, some paint work ( I keep on scratching my front lip - it cost around £100 to repair using "chips away"

I think running 911 turbo worsk out cheaper then RX7. My mate has one on a k reg. That car never breaks down. All he spents on is were and tear parts and service. His car expenses have been 4 the past 2 years less then mine..

At least the car is ok now, maybe a new part gives you more peace of mind too.
BTW, what is a vacuum pack? I know there is a vacuum chamber but never heard of a vacuum pack.

Hi
The car is perfect at the moment. I have on my receipt " removed pleenium chamber, removed and and replaced vacum pack"
It was the very firs time I saw the part, never new it existed, Apparantly on the older RX7s ( mine is on a 96 plate jap import) ther used to be lots of hoses and pipes all connected together, that was replaced by this box the size of a car stereo "face off"
That is all I know on the subject..

Michaelb
