Title: Lambo scissor doors
Post by: dandan on July 25, 2005, 03:52:27 PM
Hi all,
been looking at a lambo scissor door kit on ebay, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7988483611&sspagename=ADME:L:RTQ:UK:1
and i wanted to know if any rolling on the panels was needed specifically for an RX7 as he has one himself. he sent me a reply:
""There will be a small ammount of rolling needed on the wing, but this is very easy. The part of the wing that covers the door hinge needs this doing (so the hinge can move freely), but you can use tin-snips & cut every 6inches down to help roll without damaging the panel.""

Can anyone visualise what he means and explain it to me, how can you cut the panel without damaging it? which panel would roll, the exterior one? i\'m confused. Not seriously considering the kit yet but i\'d like to know what is involved.

edit; ooh and how easy is is to get the front wings off?

Interestingly, the advert specifically states that "no welding or cutting" is required!

And it only adds 33 pounds of weight to the car! Those gas struts must be heavy.

This is the very thing I purchased for myself!

Basically the wings need to be removed (3 bolts on top, under bonnet. bolts from the arch. 2 from bottom of wing under car and one inside the door at the top of the wing.)

With the door open look at the top bolt, you can see how the wing folds back in about an inch, tis goes all the way to the bottom of the wing and is the part that needs rolling- and yes it does need to be cut.

If your handy with a spanner and soldiering iron (electrics need extending to doors, due to longer reach with the new hinges) its a straight forward job to do, just takes time- to not mark or scratch anything.

btw, hope the above helps!

The doors look great when open, however a fair bit of effort is needed to lift them and also pull them back down.

The weight isnt OTT and most of it is the hinge itself.

Overall, if your a showoff and arent bothered about the above go for it!!

I ordered the kit before my car arrived(fresh import) and now my plans are changing for the car. Think i will end up going back to normal hinges at some point, but will leave it for awhile after all my work!! cheers rich
