Title: Whats the difference between an expensive Water injection kit and a cheap one?
Post by: antnicuk on July 23, 2005, 12:00:38 AM
You see some cheap kits for sale,  and some really expensive kits,  anyone know why i should go for an expensive one?

Most people seem to go for the straight forward boost activated one for ease so this is what i will probably go for!

no need to get too complicated under .8bar not needed it is only a safety tool and shouldnt really be relied on in case it suddenly fails i was going to run 1.2bar with mine but think i will stick to 1.1

The main reason the aquamist ones are pricey is because of the pump, think its retails for about £250 on its own, is a very good quality one though mind

ive had experience of the cheaper ones from ebay on customers cars, definitely not worth considering in my opinion! the pumps are horrid, so unreliable. others might have had good experience with them, but i havent.

I\'ve got the RE:WORX W.I. system fitted to my FD and it is very powerful etc, give them a ring for prices. :wave

water injection is quite basic as you can get in it\'s function.
The is no real expense to it. Yes you wanta good qaulity pump but I don\'t think that needs to be expensive, you want good quality jets that atomise well, along with other little fixture & fittings that various kits come with but again a system that works well need not be expensive.

Why do you want \'Water injection\'!

cooling........... simple as that.
I went the nitrous route instead !!  :yes  100 bhp shot of NOS, & the cooling effect built in. so far, so good. not blown an engine ...................... yet ??  :cheers

:eek ........ Exactly why I asked!

There have been numerous threads of late with regard to \'water injection\' and all mainly because of \'cooling or temps\'...

Also seen that it adds/increases power!

Sad really, with all the so called experts on the site..

only reason im looking at one is to keep the intercooler cool :)

i suppose in theory that the colder the air that enters the engine - the more fuel it holds - the better the drive

im expecting it to be like driving in winter only in the middle of summer ( summer - yeah right eh - with this rain :( )

they do not increase power thay are a safety tool..friend recently looking for a kit for supercharged golf was told will add 50bhp...what a load of twaddle..they are designed to ward off det or enable higher boost but not primary purpose

I would have to disagree, water injection can increase power. Lower air tempratures will give a denser fuel/air mix, also fuel mapping can be changed to allow water to cool combustion instead of petrol which reduces power.

Essentially water inj is designed to cool combustion temps.
As the compression stroke starts, there is a serious increase of heat & pressure in the combustion chamber too much heat & pressure will lead to detonation. water is very good at absorbing heat, so injecting this into combustion chamber will help prevent prevent detonation. Different people have differing opinions  on where the nozzle should be placed pre turbo, just after intercooler or just before throttle body. Ideally you need an ignition amp as water will have a quenching affect unless it it metered. Most people don\'t have a water inj system that accurately meters the correct amount of water at different load rpm points etc so in general you lose a little horsepower ebcause of the quenching affect it has on ignition spark. Water is so good at removing heat many people have found that you can run more advance timing, producing more power, without increasing risk of detonation through extreme heat & pressure. water also helps keep inside engine cleaner, alot less carbon build up. It also drops intake charge temp a little too, which also has it\'s benefits. Some people install it as just pure safety method and are not interested in running more advance timing to get the full advantage of  waters cooling ability, but just to keep combustion cool and help minimize the risk of detonation. Water injection is more beneficial to the modded rotaries as obviously bigger turbo higher boost etc etc etc increases combustion pressure and heat.
This is basically a brief non scientific explanation of what water inj does and how useful it is.
For a few hundred pounds it is the best and only real safety mod for an rx7.
It cannot be bettered in my opinion.

May have mis-understood tone of your reply but are you suggesting that it has no effect on air temps?
