Hi guys,
I have tried to find info on this on the site but had no luck, im sure its been asked before but i\'ll ask again!
The temp gauge seems to quickly rise to just below half from cold then when driving/thrashing/idleing it doesn\'t seem to fluctuate at all, just wondered if this is normal? When driving the fan isn\'t going which is a good sign as its obviously not too hot but it would just be nice to know exactly what temp its running at.
I seem to remember reading somewhere that the standard temp gauge reading isn\'t very accuarate, is this also true?
Please tell me this is normal?!!
Alex, mine reads a little above midway, but never moves. There are procedures for getting them to move, as the temps go up and down, but the couple of people I know of that did it, removed it because it started giving funny readings.
Best idea is to get yourself an aftermarket temp gauge.
Dan
Hi,
That\'s exactly the same behaviour as I get on my FD, once it\'s up to temp it doesn\'t noticably move under any circumsatnces (even stuck in london traffic on 30C+ days!).
I think it\'s pretty normal but some of the guys seem to run a little hotter. i guess my vented bonnet helps a little as in traffic you can see the heatwaves coming out of it.
The temp gague isn\'t all that accurate and should eb used as an indication of a problem only. Lots of people decide to fit various temp gagues when they get into modding for various things (water temp, oil temp, intake temp and egt temp).

Thanks guys that has made me feel much better, I would like to have aftermarket water temp and boost gauges fitted are they easy to do?
How much am i looking at to have those two supplied and fitted any ideas just roughly??
£300 +-£150
Price depends on what brand/features/mechanical/electrical and whether you can do the install yourself. You can probably get a couple of basic gauges and do it yourself for £150 or less, but you could go for dials with peak hold, warning, playback and end up paying nearer £500 for couple of gauges, control unit and someone else to install. You also need to think about where you are going to mount the gauges. Get along to a meet and look at some others.

I should be getting some gauges shipped in from USA next month sometime, yer more than welcome to split the shipping ;)
Hi , sorry you didn\'t get the info you wanted from the site hopefully this will make amends.
The Temp gauge on a 3rd Gen is not notoriously inaccurate but also it won\'t lift and tell you it\'s hot till you have just about NO water in the engine !
For the last few years l have urged people not to think ah temps up l can now thrash it telling people as well that Oil takes three times longer than water to warm up.
But even l was wide of the mark, over the winter l fitted an aftermarket mechanical gauge and have found that long long long after the stock gauge has been reading \'normal\' the other gauge hasn\'t even thought about moving !!!!!!!
If you do fit an extra gauge this should help.

Im in the process of having a water temp gauge fitted. I am however stuck! The thermocouple is to short. I bought a mechanical HKS DB gauge from Japan. Fitting the gauge is proving to be a bit annoying. I have called HKS and they are coming up with nothing, just wondering if anyone can help me out? Also does anyone know what the thread is on the gauge so that I can source a tap and get the hole cut.
Thanks
Steve
