Title: Is this RX7 worth it?
Post by: Jame5 on July 21, 2005, 02:42:31 PM
I\'ve been looking for an RX7 for a while now, only just started viewing some. I viewed a 1994 L reg type R today. Has an apparent 19k miles on it, which to be fair the interior condition backed this up. The car had just been serviced so the oil was clean, the car started from cold, then started from warm, No smoke. There was some moisture under the oil filler cap but I\'ve been told this is normal. All the aircon/electrics work. The body work condition is very good.

It has ARC panel filter, Re- Amemiya exhaust, Re- Amemiya ECU but only running 0.6bar?!? is there scope for this to be set higher? GReddy boost gauge, blitz BOV, Coilovers, the rest of the spec can be seen on the photos.

I can have it for 8k, coming from a trader who is a friend of a friend.

Seems a steal to me if thats gen 19k miles, best colour imho  :p you seem to know what to look for, take it for a test drive if she feels nice and tight you have a nice car on ur hands.

Simon.

I didn\'t get to drive it as the guy didn\'t have his trade plates on him. He took me out for a spin, only opened it up once to 5k rpm and it didn\'t feel quick, but it\'s only running 0.6bar so I couldn\'t expect it to feel like the 0.9bar RX I went out in the other day. It felt like a very smooth ride from the passenger side, no rattles or bumps/crashes. I\'m more than welcome to drive it another day though. Tomorrow or sat. He says all the service history is documented but not sure what use it is to me when I can\'t read japanese :p

The ecu is the only bit that is putting me off, don\'t really want to spend more money on a Power FC in next few months.

Looks a good buy for 8k if it all seems straight etc. Looks a very nice car....

Did he give a reason for not going above 5k? Was he actually giving it full throttle?
I\'d insist on a test drive if I were you, its the only to be sure.
But otherwise, it looks good :D

I can have a test drive saturday he said. Everyone is different when taking someone out for a spin in a car. I went on one test drive once and the guy was constantly redlining it, put me off straight away. He gave it full throttle. I\'ll get the drive on saturday and make my mind up.

Make sure you take it up the revs. The 2nd turbo doesn\'t come in until 4500rpm.

Im sure the Re:Amemiya ECU is fine, the problem is UK tuners know nothing about them. The reason the Apexi is so popular is the fact that alot of tuners know alot about it and the datalogit makes it really easy to tune.

The car looks very nice. Its a Mazdaspeed spoiler not sure what th front bumper is. Looks just like mine but mine has a slit in it to allow air to the filters above the drivers side side lights. Mine is a Border front bumper. It has a Re:Amemiya headlight kit aswel.

That one also has the Border Type II front bumper. Fitment is sublime with Border products. Nice car. :)

It looks like a nice car, but definately take it for a test drive. If you\'re unsure after that (or even if you are) you might want to get it compression tested just for peace of mind. Even if all appears to be rosy it could still have been abused and the last thing you want is a big bill to rebuild the engine

def get it  compression trested....

and make sure you drive it.... if it has boost gauge fitted, check the boost pattern... 10 - 6 - 10  psi or 0.7 - 0.5 - 0.7 bar

does it come with a warranty... shuld do if it comes froma  dealer... has to by law I think... correct me if I am wrong anyone!!!

though does sound good for the money... good job....

and welcome to the most fun club in the world...

How do I go about getting a rotary compression tested? I could potentially be looking at another RX tomorrow around the Gatwick area.

Whats there not to know about them? they are reprogrammed stock computers set up for the specific car, tuned in japanese conditions. And once they are in the UK theres no way of adjusting for changes in engine mods, or different fuel. If its set running 0.6 bar I would imagine theres either a button to up it to a higher boost level, or some thing isnt working right. The REdoms usually are set for quite high boost in my experience.

Finally, its pretty obvious but there are going to be very few legitimate 19K mile 11 year old cars. People dont generally do stuff to their car and then put it in the garage :D

Looks nice though. I would budget for an ECU tho, as 0.6bar will get boring very quickly. And get that compressions test done if you get near to buying it...

Either botch test it with  normal tester or take it to some one who has a proper rotary tester i.e. probably all the vendors at the top of the screen.

Scott Rees is his name, do you know him? It should be currently parked around the back of Masterfit. I really like the car, just the ecu thing is putting me off and I\'m pushing my budget to the max to get this car. Wondering if the ecu is set to 100ron then is it likely to go pop on uk fuel?

I saw a few more over the weekend. I decided against the white one as it was top wack on my budget and would have liked some money left over to play with just in case anything goes wrong or I feel like buying a Power FC.

I\'ve put a deposit on this red type R
(//%5BIMG%5Dhttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v731/sonnygtir/59_1_b.jpg)[/IMG] (//%5BIMG%5Dhttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v731/sonnygtir/c9_1_b.jpg)[/IMG]

It\'s pretty standard, turbo timer, exhaust, twin induction kit. It\'s a fresh import. Has a genuine reason to sell. Looked really clean. 60k on it. Interior is immaculate. Exterior is very good. I started the engine, test drove it. Felt best from all the ones I\'ve driven and been in. The deal is pending a compression check though as the seller says it\'s had a recent rebuild in Japan but has no documentation to back this up. As you can see the engine bay is clean. Looks a fresh engine but i still wanted a compression check for peace of mind. Anyone know anyone in Gatwick area that can carry one out on this car?!?! ;)

A compression test although a indicator is no guarantee

Just thought I\'d chuck that in there sorry

I guess so. The car has obviously been well looked after in Japan. If a car has cosmetically been cared for I think 9 times out of 10 the owner has put has much effort into servicing etc...

Indeed you\'d hope so mate

Good Luck

Whats your budget ?

I could push 8k and ideally been looking for one that has rebuilt engine, but would like to spend 7ish.

Good Luck

If you don\'t find one you like then I\'ll probably be making an effort to sell mine imminently (as soon as I can get the ad written again and updated)

Actually I\'ve just read that you\'ve put a deposit down, good lucky matey

Cheers Dave. I hope all goes well. At the end of a day owning a car like this comes with headaches as standard, so one day I should be expecting a rebuild.  :D
