Title: Do I need a new ECU?
Post by: gonzoninja on July 17, 2005, 05:25:37 PM
My FD3S has managed to limp through its MOT this year and apparently needs a new CAT and Exhaust. The exhaust was a Jasmo thing fitted before I got it.

I was thinking of getting a Knight Sports performance CAT and possibly a Blitz Nur Spec cat back exhaust. The car already has an Apexi Induction kit (again fitted before I got it), and reading the forums here it looks like I will need to improve the fueling, therefore should I get a new ECU or can I get away with something like a fuel cut defencer or something? I\'m not really planning on tuning the car anymore after this as I\'ve just shelled out £3000 on an engine rebuild.

If you got a power fc for example it can be used to help find probs later on if you have any as well as let you monitor most of the vitals

If your fitting a performace CAT and back box along with an induction kit then you will be safer getting an Apexi ECU. This is a good modification and as said by Scott it can help find faults quicker and is good at monitoring various stuff. It not too cheap though, buying one and tuning will cost approx. £700-900.

Well luckily, I had a word with my peeps (RX Heaven) and they said that the CAT was actually good, and only the exhaust needed to be changed. So I\'m doing that, then I guess I\'m going to have to sell my girlfriend into white-slavery  to pay for the Apexi power fc.

Thanks for your help

Isn\'t the Knight Sports ECU just a Chipped normal ECU whereas the Apexi is a completely new ECU?

PFC is easiest to map in this country and yes is a stand alone ECU

Most piggy back ecu\'s are sold when the owner does the safe thing and buys a Apexi, check with who ever did your rebuild to see if they allow exhaust changes etc

(Jasma isn\'t a make of exhaust but a jap standard)
