Title: Will the following mods harm my car?
Post by: Andrew Harper on July 12, 2005, 08:21:06 PM
Hello,

I have a \'96 UK car and so far have a Gruppe M intake kit on it.

The rear silencer is starting to look a little unhealthy and I was going to go for the full treatment of downpipe, sports cat, and probably petit racing cat-back (I love the Apexi N1-dual but I believe it\'s very loud).

I worried that being an 8 bit ECU car that the fueling will then run too lean.

If anyone can give some advice on this I would be thankfull!

Of course the one advantage of living on an island with no MOT system is I don\'t have to worry about the emissions test! But I know for certain that removing the Cats altogether would be very bad!

Please bear in mind that as I live on Guernsey getting the ECU checked is slightly more difficult than usual (although I could get it checked at the Mazda garage).

Thanks..

In which case you probably dont want to have to sort out getting it rebuilt there either? :D

Seriously man; intake kit, downpipe, decat or hi-flow cat, and cat-back is way more than you want to chance on a stock ecu. People say u can get away with x,y and z mods before going with a programmable EMS - seen plenty of cars bust apex seals with minimal mods...you makes your choice and takes your chances as they say mate!

Replace what u have to and save for a programmable ECU, or leave it as is with intake - and catback if you must...

How do you find the Gruppe M intake Andrew ? Did you put it on and thus can compare before and after ?

Cheers,

Mart.

I may be missing something here, but could someone explain to me why a 16 bit ECU would be able to provide the required fuelling for the car with the mods proposed, while an 8 bit ECU would not?

Additionally, the intake and exhaust mods you propose may lead to boost spikes, which in turn can lead to detonation - can this not be prevented by using a separate boost controller?

To put it into a nutshell the fueling is pretty well fixed on any stock Mazda RX7 ecu,so everytime you make a mod that helps the engine to breathe a bit better the ecu does not add more fuel,so the engine starts to run leaner which will eventually as Rich said cause catastrophic detonation and leave you with a big bill to fix it.
If you put any form of boost control on,what is the point? You would have to keep boost at stock levels to be safe so would have stock power still!Might as well have a standard car.
Get an ecu and then enjoy more power safely.
regards
Carl

Intake and cat back is as far as i would go with stock ecu.Apexi Power FC ecu\'s are plug and play,gd for all levels from minor mods upto 500bhp and beyond, very reasonably priced now also,if you look about.
As Rich/Carl have said, will save you money in the long term mate, i wouldnt take the chance but thats up to you............

Thanks for your opinions guys,

I did consider going Apexi PFC first, so I may change my plans slightly!

When the current cat-back expires I may replace it with the racing beat silencer and then leave it at that.

One thing though that might be answered for me, I think I read somewhere that being a UK car the Apexi PFC wouldn\'t plug easily into the loom on my car (although this was quite a while ago).

To answer goose\'s question I was told by a rotary specialist that the 16 bit ECU\'s have a slightly wider range and can therefore cope a little better with mods (although that may have been a load of rubbish....)

...and to answer Marts question, no I\'m afraid I haven\'t been able to do before and after tests on the GruppeM intake, it\'s a very nice kit though, very nicely made and fits without a problem. Unless you start uprating the likes of the intercooler I suppose. It also has some silencing built into it to dull the noise of the air pump and the return valves.

Thanks

Andrew

Crikey! That comment could be mis-construed! The base map on a PFC is rich, but not 500 bhp rich! It is plug and play for a stock car, but I wouldn\'t get too far down the mod list without getting it mapped.
Title: 16 bit or 8 bit
Post by: andyrose on July 13, 2005, 12:17:30 PM
older cars were 8 bit
newer ones 16 bit
its to do with the processor speed of the ECU
I\'m no PC/IT expert tho

Hi Andrew,
I was living on Guernsey last year, which one is yours?  I nearly had Bluechips black one, but pulled out after they spent 3 weeks ripping it to pieces trying to fit an alarm!

Anyway, Hijack over.

mis-construed???Sorry if you mis-understood.

Plug means there is no loom/wiring harness to make, plugs straight into original car loom and play means to alter/map the car according to mods.

500bhp and beyond meaning that it can handle/be mapped to support that kind of power aswell as running your stock car on the original base map.If you intend on tuning your 13B to that extent or leaving it with minor mods, you will not have to buy another ecu, making it very versatile and a good modification to make.
Getting it mapped to support your level of tune,i thought was obvious??????????????
