Title: Age old question on fuel
Post by: robedwards99 on July 12, 2005, 06:46:21 PM
I\'ve had a damn good search on the forum and can\'t find an answer!

My FD3 is due in the next couple of weeks.

What do you guys put in it as a rule?

I have read that you can run them fine on 95, I\'ve also read that you need to run them on 97/98 with an additive.. confusing!

Can I get away with putting in 97/98 without anything added? Or should I be looking at adding an octane booster? I read that octane boosters often do very little to up the octane content of fuel...???

I know it is going to depend on what mods you have but what should I be putting in for a (not 100% sure yet!) standard FD3 with just an exhaust?

Advice please! :)

Ive been running optimax fine without any problems, Bp Ultimate too should be fine, I would hazard a guess if caught short you could stick quarter a tank of ron95 in to get you to a shell station or something, the car should run safer with octane booster but should run fine with optimax etc...

Where ever possible get Optimax , BP Ultimate is a good second choice and if you really have to use anything else then take it easy

Thats the basic philosophy I\'ve used for the last year with no probs , never bothered with octane boosters ( heard a lot of mixed opinions about them )

depends what your car is mapped for. If you\'ve been mapped for 98 and then stick a load of 95 in and floor it, well.....

if you stick 95 in and just take it easy you should be fine.

If you;re mapped for 95 then no worries.

i\'ve always preffered bp ultimate to optimax for all cars i\'ve had, but have also (quite strangely) found that my rx7 absolutely loves sainsburys super unleaded!?  :xconfused it runs fantastico on it.

Has anybody used "Total" Super unleaded?  My local Esso garage has changed to Total recently.  It says on the pump that it is 98ron...

Juz, where abouts in Barnsley are you, im near Darton.

Cheers

Erm.. It won\'t be mapped for anything I guess. It\'ll be fresh from Japan with (as far as I know) no mods except HKS exhaust and turbo timer.

You should be fine with Optimax or BP Ultimate.
If you start modding then its time to get it mapped.

As a side note just got back from Kefelonia and they have all this fantastic petrol and no proper roads to use it on.

standard unleaded
super unleaded
V-power
V-power racing

When will the UK catch up

I\'m sure we will one day, but like most things in this country now, it\'ll be taxed huge amounts!!!
Did you happen to notice what ratings the higher grade fuels were?

I think the V-power Racing was 100 Ron.
Looking at Shells website V-power is probably 98 Ron with better cleaning additives than standard super unleaded. By that token like our Optimax.

V-Power: says 100 on some of the pumps. And I\'m prepared to believe it, 8 felt like a 7 through Germany!

I know a guy that has been running leaded fuel for 15 years in his first gen, he thought he\'d "risk it" and use unleaded because there was no 4Star for miles, "went like a rocket". Poor bloke, I didn\'t have the heart to tell him he\'s been paying £1.05/Litre for a fuel he didn\'t need to use. "Obviously being a classic car, I thought you had to use Leaded" Do\'H!!! Optimax and that sort of higher octane stuff is spot on. Anything cheep and cheerfull will work but not as well, it\'s more likely to detonate under boost. Octane boosters aren\'t worth a toss.

Not far from you then, on Rotherham Road in Smithies (inbetween Athersley and Monk Bretton).
