Looking to go single, just wondering whats the best kit to buy and how much u payed for it :)
:wave
More info would be good:
1) What power are you looking for and how much lag are you prepared to put up with.
2) Street, track or drag.
3) Is your engine ported (makes a difference on what\'s worth having).
4) budget!
Have you already got an uprated intercooler and fuelling?
1) want as little lag as possible, aroung 400-600 BHP
2) mainly street but i fancy doing a few quarter miles.
3) not ported yet but its having a rebuilt at the mo and im thinking of a street port :)
4) will pay the money if its worth it lol
Iv got all hks uprated intercoolers, dont think the fuellings uprated tho...
that help?? hehe
So you want 600hp (mainly for the street) and no lag...hmmm :D
1) Drive FD\'s with various singles and see what floats your boat - theres no point any one telling u u want this or that turbo without trying it yourself - cause chances are your feelings on minimal lag for e.g. or not some one elses... Bare in mind a 600hp RX7 is unlikely to be \'very pleasant\' on the road - 400hp is much more friendly and useable and proably a lot quicker than you probably think it will be.
2) budget properly for it and every thing u will need in addition to the turbo kit if u dont have it already in place; fuel pump and injectors, engine management, uprated oil and water cooling? uprated clutch, drive train bracing, boost controller, decent exhaust and inlet, ignition mods, uprated diff, uprated brakes all the less obvious stuff u wont think of. Lots of labour and some tuning on top too. You are looking at a good few grand obviously altho u can of course do the main stuff first and build on it - but it will probably end up more expensive in the end.
3) if you are keen seriously consider having it done at the same time as engine is put back in after the rebuild as you will save a chunk of labour
4) get your motor ported - a stock motor will limit ultimate power output majorly. Also, a big turbo really wants big boost :D - so get the motor pinned and so on (all the high power mods) if you are going big turbo and HP :god
5) time for my tea :)
HTH,
Rich
EDIT: just to re-iterate point 1; drive other singles so you know what suits you before buying any thing from any one
So can everyone bring there rx7`s to knockhill next weekend and ill hire the track for tha day n test them all muhahahaha!!!
Cheers for the info, think 600bhp is way to much for the road just interested in a few idears :)
I know a guy in japan that can get me all the tuning parts i need at trade prices because i buy cars from him :) hopefully save a few pennys there and add a few more toys.
Ordered my Garrett T04Z kit from OZ a week ago, going to cost me approx £2.5K when its landed, and depending on what boost I run, it should see anything from 400rwhp to 550rwhp
You getting the kit from HPIAB Blitz?
Yes I am Rich, spoke to Geoff last week when my turbo pack expired, he told me just to make sure it has v-band setup, so I checked with Morrie who confirmed it does. I think I will be first in the UK to get T04Z HPIAB kit. Will take pics of the kit when it arrives and post it on this thread should arrive end of next week.
And please do number 2 BEFORE you bolt the turbo on, otherwise you\'ll be on here asking about how to fix a melted this that and the other!
Cheaper and less laggy to get to 400bhp and throw your back seats away than it is to get to 600bhp that you\'ll never use...
So going buy what iv posted above, what singles better for me? say for 400 BHP, i dont have the access to try before i buy :( so i need your wisdom :)

thats a single turbo running over 500 bhp - could be a starting point for you

Not got the hang of these forum thingies have you Stu? :D
I\'d get as much of the auxillary stuff sorted before you even consider going for a single turbo. The twin turbo pack can give some good results with most of the mods that get you close to being able to go single without fear of melting something.
A stock twin turbo will do a 12.5 sec quarter with the right work done to it. Just look at sdminus and warthogs cars. If your able to do the work all at once then thats great, but most can\'t !
Shaun
personally if your goal is for 400FWBHP, then go for the GT35/40 Kit , Shy Auto and Reworx do them, you will easy get that power with stock ports and 1 bar of boost. and give a very good Midrange punch.
yes 400FWBHP is possiable with stock twins but you will be pushing them at there limit so you will have reliabilty issues as it will be producing very hot compressed air at anything past 1 bar, so water injection is a must as well.
With the 35/40 Kits that turbo is hardly breakin a sweat to produce the same amount of power, plus you can get rid of the rats nest, less heat under the hood, and you will save some weight :evillaugh
Max is your man to talk about that turbo
Sounds good to me Blitzboy :)
Going for a GT35R single turbo kit with a street port, uprated brakes, uprated radiator and iv already got the uprated intercoolers n ast tanks :)
just need a ecu box, cheap second hand one would be nice lol
BlitzBoy : where does the T04Z fit into the HKS range and what is "HPIAB" all about? (HKS don\'t have it on their comparison chart :( http://www.hksusa.com/categories/more.asp?id=1094)

Hi Chris
The T04Z is essentially a ball bearing TO4R. I read ages ago it was going to be a T04R exhasut on a T51 compressor with a BB core. Looks about right.

Hi All,
Here\'s my personal views on singles ( bound to upset someone!!)
Yes with the GT42R I have on the car now with big ports and have loads of Lag but when l ran my car with an extended port engine ( exhaust only), 35/40, 1600\'s and stock primary\'s we found that at 0.9 Bar we had 400 horse easily :D .
It not only ran a 12.2 with absolute rubbish gearing it was and still is far and away the nicest FD to date l have ever driven, with NO lag because l had full boost the second l went near the throttle, giving the car a totally predictable progressive linier power delivery.
This meant it was now an FD with no vices be you in the dry or the wet, leaving you with out the twin turbo is it going to spool up and catch you out feeling.
For any of you buying the Horsepower in a box Turbo kits, a word of warning.
There are several people on here with bad experiences of this company\'s kit, ( hopefully they will come out and say)
Yes the Garret Turbo is the same as the other various Kits on the market but the important bit is the manifold and unless Horsepower in a box have got their act together their manifolds are, putting it nicely "suspect on reliability".
This is because people have had flanges warp and primary pipes crack resulting in at least two people that l know of having to have new manifolds fabricated over here after giving up with the reliability of the Aussie unit.
Yes they are cheap but as they say "you get what you pay for"
Spoken to Morrie about the Manifolds, and assures me the manifolds have been improved, I might have extra welding done to it when it gets delivered in any case.
Yes 20B_Boy is correct in the spec of turbo, BB version of the T04R with the different compressor.
Even if the manifold goes t*ts up I can get a one fabricated for less then £300, Im still saving over 1.5K!
The most important thing for me is turbo is a full blown Garrett unit NOT a cheap copy. HKS do a version of this called the TO4Z signature but this was mucho money.
Ta for the info, the T04Z looks to be in the right territory for me :) (>400 rwhp)
I\'ve been on a sloe journey towards that kind of power - going from a standard car to ecu, de-cat, induction and porting (plus breaks and suspension). I\'ve now got all the bits in place to go to the next stage (1600 inj, fuel pump and reg, boost controller, down-pipe) once they\'re in place I\'ll look at losing the twins next year for a single.
There\'s basically no need to do it all at once and you can pick and choose the right bits for your requirements.
Before the single goes on (and after the next step) I\'ll have to do the clutch, engine and diff braceing. If I were to have done it all at once
a) I would have ended up somewhere but not understod how the changes alter the way the car drives
b) Had to find a large pot of money - probably 10k all in.
The pleasure of modding a car is, for me, in the gradual process.
The ultimate jouney I\'ve seen anyone doing with this is Glenn and his 4-rotor project. Been going years and still has a few to run I guess but it\'ll be perfect when done!
Good point about the gradual change and being able to see how the handling is altered. It\'s the cost of labour when doing it bit by bit which concerns me (including multiple mapping sessions)!
Interesting that a few people on here recomend fitting a diff brace as part of a big single setup,is this something to do with the extra torque having adverse effects on the drivetrain.....?
James
Whoohoo, my kit is being sent by fedex on monday!!!! cant wait. :D
Yep I will be fitting a Diff brace as well as an engine torque damper brace should help with the gear changes.
Well Blitzzzzzzzzzi baby. My move to single will be later this year, it will have to be a winter project as need to free up some cash from a property we are selling.
I have made my mind up I want a 10 sec street rex and will be going Skyline hunting on the strip. :eek
It is going to be a new engine with the same porting etc as the 9 sec car, T051 bb, uprated gearbox, diff etc so will cost a pile of beer tokens, which will be donated to the RE:WORX crew.
I am still intent on holding the twins british record before i go single and will resume that task as soon as we have the parts to sort out my side seal problem, ( which i have traced back to a turbo spike whilst overtaking prior to Geff fitting the PFC and tuning her, my fault too much right foot. ).
Watching your project with interest. Catch up with you soon. Best Regards. :wave
Oh---also fit the gearbox brace, it does work and makes for good changes. You may want to let the gearstick spring out of 2nd on the change up and then just push it in. I found it stopped any chance of missing a gear or hitting 5th. Try it see how you get on. :wiggle
Warthog, you going with the T51 then, cool, SPL version? that thing sucks up small children I heard lol :eek
Yeah, it\'s going to be funnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn. :3gears-rh
Im jealous :((
lol
not trying to make u jealous but here are some pics of my kit which i recieved yesterday

The rest of the pics are on this thread

Looking very nice (and big). Whats the difference between the v-bands ?? How much work do you have to do to the gearbox and rear diff ?
I\'d love to go single in the next 12 months, just need to save up :p
Shaun
The v band is good quality and will hold that downpipe to back of the turbo real tight!
Will fit a gearbox and diff brace to lock everything down, if the gearbox goes pop, will get quaife internals.
Very nice, looking forward to the results When are you expecting to get it all in?
Ah right, its the taper. So how much are the quaife internals ? How much punishment will the gearbox and diff actually take before they go pop ?
Shaun
Well on Hols from next week, so end of August I\'d say for Dyno tuning.
Found Quaife internals are about £600.
The diff should hold up if you eliminate wheel hop with the brace, should be good for up to 500rwhp

Which gearset is that Blitz?
