I noticed a little issue I have witht he car, thought it might have been fixed when I replaced the spark plugs but its still there, Im thinking/hoping its a precautionary thing these cars do but I\'ll ask and see as I cant find anything ont he search...
Anyhow, gave it a good blast. like you do. Everything was fine, felt strong and good. THEN it seems to just go into limp mode, I was reading rull boost on the gauge and on the Apexi PFC even though it didnt feel like I was on full boost, but the revs we\'re creeping ever so slowly and basically the car didnt want to go anywhere, as if the ECU was restricting me from putting my foot down... is that normal? It has done it before and Im just hoping its something that says OK your giving the engine too much stick I\'ll give it a break for a while. as soon as I cruise for say a few minutes its back to normal....
any suggestions would be great thanks...
Limp home mode won\'t let you rev above 3500 and won\'t let you put any load on the motor, you can creep up the revs, but at the lightest throttle possible, any throttle above 3500 will cut out. It will only go away if you reset the ecu. Sounds more like an air leak, any spluttering or hunting under full boost should be delt with extreeme caution! Check your knock readings as well. Don\'t do the now famous; "it was knocking, so I backed off, then I booted it agian to see what would happen" POP!
maybe you have an air pipe leaking?Sometimes you can still seem to get boost pressure, but a pipe may have split or be loose.
Regards
Carl
Seems strange though that its fine 95% of the time.... surely an air leak would be constant?
I dont get any spluttering at all, seems to be sweet as a nut, just after giving it a bit of stick for more than a few minutes it likes to tell me to stop...
How do I check the knock readings on the PFC? whats a good reading and whats a bad reading? defo interested in knowing this as I only veiw 4 things on my PFC all the time which is speed, ACT, Water temp and boost....
Thanks for the replies :)
Also check that the small pipe has not come off the ap sensor on the back engine wall to the right of the inlet manifold.

just select knock level on your monitor. Personally I go for an 8 way monitor, with Air temp, water temp, revs, inj duty, knock, boost and inj temps.
I dunno what a bad knock level would be, mine never leaves the 30s. I always have a look at the peak hold just before I get out to make sure nothing was going out of range.
Right then, been out today, I chose a 4 way with speed, air temp, water temp and knock. it gives a bar movement, when even SLIGHTLY under load it goes right to the top. average reading on full boost was 150ish, saw 161 MAX, I dont know what to make of it at all to be honest.... Oedipus Rex... you say you get 30??? seems a mile off what Im seeing. I am running 0.85 bar of boost. anyone know what these readings mean? I aint got a clue to be honest whether theyre good or bad...
I always take pfc knock values with a pinch of salt as they seem to vary greatly between cars but blimey those figures are very high! Has your pfc been mapped for the boost and mods you\'re running? Maybe try turning the boost down a notch and see if this makes much difference or just take it easy for now until you can get it mapped properly.
I run 0.9 bar of boost and yeah, even at WOT it never gets out of the 30\'s
I would suggest setting your pfc to check your inj duty and see where that goes. Put your foot down until it hits 90% and then back off, don;t wanna blow your engine. If you\'re up to 90% duty cycle by say 5500 - 6000 revs at WOT then your gonna run out by 7k.I would suggest putting your foot down to 6k revs then doing a peak hold to see what your duty was at 6k revs. Depending on your mods at 0.85 you could be running out of duty cycle and thats why its knocking (although I agree with Memski about the pinch of salt) but if it genuinely is hitting 150-160 that as a lot of knocking. I think the PFC puts the knock warning light on at anything over 45 (not at all sure about this though so don;t take it as gospel)
I would take it a bit easy to be honest until you see whats happening, you don;t want a bang from one of your rotors.
From what I recall its all been set up by pip at WGT not so long ago....
Right so if I check the Inj Duty on the PFC boot it til it hits 90% and then see what the figures giving... what duty should I expect to see then?
Im not 1005 sure on what your trying to tell me, I do understand the fundamentals of running a turbo\'d engine etc and how to look for "knocking" but the PFC and its figures are way beyond my knowledge so Ive tended to leave it be and just read what I understand...
thing is Im scared rotten now... if I pull of gently like you would in any car first second change into third at 20ish into 4th at 30ish etc Im still getting 130 on the knock... goes to 150 on full boost.....
doubt its running out of duty then, my thought was that at full boost the injectors were not able to push enough fuel into the car, leaning out your a/f ratio and making it run real lean but if its happening at low injection load I\'m a mile out. Like Memski said the knock indicator is not to be fully trusted, so it could be a false reading but who wants to take a risk like that?
dunno what to suggest to be honest mate.
Ok no worries, like I say 95% of the time its running sweet as a nut and I cant fault it, I\'ll prob ring pip 2moz then and see what he has to say, was hoping to run it up the pod on saturday... dont want to if its not right (obviously) but it does seem right all the time. only it seems to not rev at all after giving ti some for a few minutes, been OK all today and its bee in the scortching sun....
time will tell, just hope its not a 3k job ;) lol
If your car was set up by Pip then it should be running very well. Ring him on Monday morning and see if he can find the problem fo9r you over the phone as Pip knows all there is to know about ye rotary engine ;)

Cheers Gurj, thats the plan I reckon, I do believe his work is top notch even though I have had no first hand experience of him myself although Im just concerned from comments on here... seems way of the mark...
Anyhow, checked a few things onthe PFC and the Inj Duty was reading about 88% max on full throttle all the way through to the top of the rev range, it never went about 88%... gentle cruising speed saw figures of between 20-30% Does this sound right? you mentioned back off at 90% but I didnt even him 90? Also the knock was reading voer 100 before Id even hit 20mph... a gentle drive as if you was i a family car with your kids in the back and I got up to about 130 on the knock... saw a max of 175 whilst having a play with a motorbike on the way home ;) :p
Any other ideas/suggestions or comforting words to pass on? Must admit never had a problem in the 25 miles to nottingham cinema and 25 miles back again....
88% is fine. Like I say if you were getting the knock reading at low revs its nothing to do with your duty cycle
hmmm, still youve worried me now saying yours doesnt go over 30 and mines way off the mark. Something doesnt add up even though it seems fine?
It should be in a thousand pieces with knock like that. GET IT SORTED!
as a quick fix dont know where it is located but the knock sensor cld be lose or faulty and this wld give these abnormal readings..if ur knock really was 150/160 then i think ur engine wld have gone

I wasn\'t saying everything is fine, just that your duty cycle is fine. Ocviously if you end up in limp mode there is a problem. However it may well not be related to those knock levels, which could just be a dodgy sensor, or could be a problem.
Pip\'ll know

Yeah this sounds a little more believable... anyone know where the sensor is?
Im getting 33 on the knock sensor just from tickover.... I drove into work and didnt go over 40mph and didnt go over 3k revs... max knock was 137... surely its not pinking in these conditions and I certainly know if it was on full bost if it was that bad.
lets hope pip answers the phone then ;) :wiggle
Sounds more and more like a dodgy sensor.
yeah I\'ve had a search and found where its located, Im gonna go out at dinner and see if its connected properly or loose etc before I ring Pip, no need to bother him if its something I already suspect anyhow...
I thought injectors were like anything else in terms of capacity... if it gets to 70% you should worry, and if it gets to 85-90% they\'re probably not efficient any more. If they\'re running at 100% it\'s broke...
I\'d have a good look at fuelling and check you have a clean fuel filter and the pump\'s up to spec!
I dunno Zevans, Pip told me that anything up to 85% was healthy, up to 90% was passable and over that start getting worried. We put mine on the dyno and even though my injectors were getting upto 92% at WOT and full revs, my A/F ratio was still well under 11.5 so I left it at that, happy I wasn\'t going to det.
What is Inj Duty then? I presumed it was how hard the Injectors were working... so if it was 100% then it mines they are working to their full capacity and if anything cant supply enough fuel.... 85% means they are pushing through 85% of fuel that theyre capable off?
no? I have a bl00dy manual for the PFC, might give it a read tonight when I finally get chance to sit down
yes dave thats pretty much it. The point is the more of their capacity to inject they use, the less effecient they are. So you are more likely to start running lean the higher your injection duty is. By the time you hit 100% its a fair bet your ****ed.
ahh good, there are 2 other options on the PFC, Inj Ld and another, cant remember exactly what they are... any ideas what theyre for? think 1 shows a graph of the fuel curve or something along them lines...
Yup 100% means the injector is open as often as it can be and is flowing all of the rated capacity... so I\'d still worry if it\'s anything over 80%, especially in this weather. If we get a cold snap you\'ll need more fuel and where\'s it going to come from? (Mind you, if Pip says 85% is OK, I\'m not going to argue with him :god )
From a quick Google it looks like ignt ld, not Inj Ld, which is injection advance / retard and not related to fuel flow. OTOH if you\'re seeing mega retard this might be because you have det and the PFC is trying to stop it!
