Title: SPlit rim separation
Post by: Eddie on July 09, 2005, 01:02:41 AM
hi

I have removed one of my Stern 17 inch split rims as I am getting them referbed so I unbolted the spoke part from the main wheel, which was easy enough, when I had almost got all the bolts out the tyre deflated,
It started witha small hisss then all the air shot out really quickly.
I thought the tyre on the rim would remain inflated.

Is this normal for a tyre to deflate or have I some how cought the valve?

ANy idea\'s advise welcome as I know nothing about wheels.

Thanks

All depends on how the wheel is made.

if its a two piece or 3 piece wheel the rim will be in one piece or two halves respectively

Hi
It looks like a three piece rim, so the outer rim the dish part is also a peice, when I removed the spokes the other two parts of the wheel separated and let out all the air.

DOes anyone know if I will have to seal the two wheel parts before bolting back on the spokes to make it seal air tight?

Thanks

If they leaked when you un-did them, then at a wild guess yes you would need to re-seal them.

But this is best done by someone who a)knows what they are doing, and b) can make sure that the centre and outter rims are centred. By this I mean that the wheel runs true.

If it is out by the slightest margin, you could damage the hub bearings amost other bits.

Thanks for the info, I will take it to a wheel speacialist and get this one done.

The others I will make sure  are deflated before I take the spokes off.

Cheers

Dont forget not to paint the areas that join together. Paint will put them out as well.

Thanks Fish I will make sure I dont paint the area\'s.

One more question, if I let the air out before separating the spokes I should not have to reseal the other three alloys?

Thanks
