Post by: kevint on July 08, 2005, 10:36:50 AM
I had a flyer in the post from T W Whites, they say they are the only dealer to offer an RX-8 Tiptronic Automatic:

Anyone driven one?

Kevin,

Tiptronix RX-8\'s were only ever released in Japan , never for export as an official model. These must be \'grey\' imports....not uk models.

Before anyone gets too excited, it\'s the lo-power 4 port lump.

So no snicky box, redline at 7500, and I think only 4 ratios anyway. Still got the brakes and handling and the looks though I guess, but don\'t expect to overtake ANYTHING on the motorway. Don\'t expect over 15mpg either!

T W Whites seem to be really pushing these! (Or possibly they\'ve been really pushing the same one for months cos they can\'t shift it :D )

Autos have their place, but it\'s not mated to a no-torque revvy NA RENESIS...

How then do you explain all the "Tiptronic" Autos for sale in dealerships both in the USA & down under in Oz....??

Although my Auto version is rated at a poultry 141Kw, swapping the "export" ECU for the JDM version ECU should bring power up to 154Kw thanks to its better fuel ignition mapping.

Being a 4-port 13B-MSP engine means I am behind the 8-ball straight away & have little chance of matching the 184kw from the JDM 6-port 13B-MSP / manual version.

Gotta say that the auto version is brilliant in Sydney\'s day to day traffic. Easily flicked to "manual mode" & the shift paddles on the wheel are pretty cool for getting the most from its mediocre power levels.

I think people are far too focused on power figures anyway ... 141Kw is plenty and more than enough to get people into more trouble than they know what to do with :)

you don\'t need 500hp to have fun
